Leo clung to Sandra's shoulders as she carried him across the sand. He kept his moans of woe to himself, but it was hardly to impress Sandra in any way. He just didn't want the crazy Crank cult girls to think they were easy pickings and run faster.
"Hurry up!" Darius shouted. Law screamed something about that being his line as the remaining of Group E passed Leo. By now, he and Sandra were in the back of the pack.
"Don't say it," Sandra said as she struggled to pull him along. Leo held back his request for her to go on and leave him. But if she knew he would ask that, she also knew he was dead weight. And yet, she tightened her grip around his waist, carrying as much of his weight as possible. Leo couldn't help getting his hopes up, but then he remembered the kiss from earlier. There was no stopping his heart from flying.
"Sandra!" Leo noticed Piora and Trenton waiting on them, Darius a little farther away. Piora had a sword in her hand, extending the hilt to Sandra. "You do what you're good at. We'll get Leo out of here." Sandra smiled.
"At least be careful," Leo begged as he loosened his grip on Sandra and grabbed Trenton's arm. Sandra whisked the sword out of Piora's hand and started running back the way they had come.
"No promises!" Sandra's katana made contact with one of the girl's knives almost immediately. He noticed the smile on her face as she backed off and swung for the Crank's knees.
"Come on!" Trenton said, pulling him away. Piora grabbed his other arm and the siblings ran with him on their shoulders. Darius ran with them, pointing some distance away.
"The others are over that ridge," Darius shouted. "Well, they're over whatever that is. A sand hill?" Piora shrugged, a moan escaping her lips.
"It doesn't matter. As long as we get there." Leo looked back. Sandra was still fighting, but he was pretty sure she now had two swords. She slashed through the Cranks, locking blades with them several times.
"I'm sure she'll be ok." Leo turned to look at Trenton. The boy had a smile on his face, but Leo could see the worry in his eyes.
"I hope," Leo murmured as they continued to run.
It took them a while to cross the short distance across the sand. It wasn't hard to spot the other boys in their dark clothes though. They looked ready to run again at the first sign of trouble. Darius explained to them that they might not have to, given how "the crazy chic," as Law described her, was fending off the last few Cranks. Everyone seemed to settle.
"I'm telling you guys," Ted said enthusiastically as Trenton set Leo down, "that girl is an assassin. Like an actual assassin!" Ted glanced around at the group weirdly, ready to say something that would take their breaths away. "She lives to kill."
Law scoffed. "The girl has a death wish. If I had money, I'd bet she took on more than she can chew."
Leo was ready to get to his feet and take him out when Trenton held him down. "He's not worth it." Leo rolled his eyes.
"I know that. Just can't believe I was starting to like him." Trenton smiled.
"Is it possible to like him?" Leo pursed his lips, trying to hold back a chuckle. Trenton did the same. Piora came over while shaking her head.
"How's your leg?" she asked. Leo tried to lift it, but he stopped, clenching his teeth. Piora cocked her head a little. "Guess that's a 'not good.'" Leo nodded, biting his lip. Piora pulled his leg out a little, extending her hand out to Trenton. He pulled off his tattered shirt, handing it to her.
"I'll get you something else," she promised, pulling the scraps away from the bigger pieces. She started to wrap Leo's leg, though it wasn't that good a job.
