My life started on the downhill slope when my dear mother told me she received a letter from headquarters.
It was a gloomy Monday morning, and I was grumpy, a normal occurrence for me. I had just come out of the lift with Diana when I heard a shriek.
"Great. Let me guess? You got accepted to work at another advanced lab studying the forbidden talents?" I said turning to my sister.
She shrugged. "Hey. I can't help that I got the smarts."
I rolled my eyes.
Mom came rushing into the hallway. "Luna! I have amazing news!"
I groaned. Whenever Mom thought it was good news that generally meant it was bad.
"What is it Mom?" Diana answered for me.
Mom let out an excited squeal. "You have been handpicked by Commander Ajax to lead the next Mission Falcon!"
There was a long silence.
Diana cleared her throat. "That's great news Luna!"
My heart filled with dread. This was not great news. This was horrible news.
I forced a smile. "That is great news Mom."
Mom smiled proudly. "I can't believe it. My daughter is going to lead Mission Falcon. I'm going to go call Lau rah."
The beamer rang in the kitchen.
"That's my cue." Diana kissed me on the cheek and gave me a sympathetic look. "I'll see you after class Lu."
I waved as she headed out the door.
The beamer rang again.
Mom looked over her shoulder. "I better go answer that." As a second thought she added. "Luna, you can go ahead and head upstairs."
"I can't. I'll be late for class."
She shook her head. "From now on you won't have classes. If you did you'd be swarmed with attention and questions. The Commander is taking all of the kids on Mission Falcon out of class due to some security breaches that have happened in the past."
I screamed in frustration and dropped my bag. "Why is it always my life that gets ruined?"
Mom narrowed her eyes in dissaproval.
"Can I at least go visit Liam after classes end?"
She shook her head. "No contact outside of family"
I grit my teeth. "Can I at least call him?"
She thought a moment. "I suppose."
The beamer rang for the third time.
"Now if you'll excuse me I must answer that."
I sighed and head back to my room.
~^~
I pushed the call button on my hologram device for the millionth time. Why won't he pick up?
It beeped signaling an incoming message.
Can't talk right now. What's up? Why weren't you in class?
I got a letter from headquarters saying that I was drafted as the next team leader for Mission Falcon. I sent back.
Hang on...
I waited for a couple minutes until I saw an incoming call.
A sandy blonde head of hair with blue eyes and freckles appeared on my screen.
