I found myself sorting out the letters with Sofia that afternoon, which was not a bad thing. I actually liked her much more than Shane and didn't feel like such a lowlife compared to her. She was some sort of nerd herself – a historic novel stan precisely – but unlike me she wasn't scared to talk about it at school and would talk endlessly about the books she had just finished or the ones she liked the most.
She suddenly stopped in the middle of one of her narratives and spurted out a few swear words. I noticed the letter in her hands and immediately understood that it was something for Shane.
"Another of Shane's R-rated letters?"
"Oh no, girl, this is not Shane's." She answered while holding the letter out to me. "This is for you."
"Why are you swearing, what's with it?"
I grabbed the letter and immediately started reading it.
"Oh my god..." I muttered under my breath.
"I can't tell if it's sexy or plain creepy." She said while looking at me, a hand under her chin.
"It's creepy as heck!"
She laughed.
"It might be."
"But have you read it? It's really creepy."
The letter was written as a poem and every verse was more crude that the one before. All you have to know is that it ended with the grossest depiction of intercourse I had ever read in my entire life.
"People who are into hardcore porn might like it." Sofia joked. "What did he say already? Let me enter your..."
"Ah! Stop it! It's so gross!"
I was both turned out and scared by this letter. Everything about it screamed "creep". How could someone from our school even write this? I couldn't imagine a single one of them who would be so messed up. That was if this was sincere though, I hoped it was really just some kind of sick joke coming from Jane or someone who didn't like me.
For a minute, I even thought it could've come from Shane but I didn't imagine him actually taking some time out of his day to creep me out with a letter.
"Let me tell you Shane's letters are way less creepy than that."
"Yeah, I read a few of them already," she answered. "I even kept this one because it was so funny. Even the paper has been sprayed with perfume. Do you want to smell?"
"Ew, it smells awful."
"I know right? I'm keeping it so I can show it to the squad. I hope you don't mind?"
"Not at all. He already has so many of them anyway."
I picked another letter from the bunch hoping it would be normal for once.
It was not.
"Sofia, listen to this one: I have the biggest crush on Mr Fieldman. He is hot af and I want him to leave his wife for me. What should I do? I'm just a 11th grader girl, I'm afraid he won't take me seriously."
Sofia and I exchanged a taken aback look before bursting out with laughter. She was almost crying while laughing so hard and my ribs started to hurt after laughing for so long.
"The students here are so messed up." She managed to say between two laughing fits.
I couldn't agree more and started laughing even harder.
It was just at that moment that Shane picked to enter the scene. Him finding us hysterically laughing and crying left him dumbfounded.
"What are you doing here, I thought you had something else to do?" I asked, not without a few more giggles and tears.
Sofia, whose Shane's entrance had made even more hysterical, was laughing harder and harder by every second. And it got worse every time she looked at him.
"I thought I'd help you sort out the mail."
"But why are you here?" I insisted, "You told me you wouldn't come today."
"Come on, can't I do anything without you being suspicious?"
He sat down next to me and started digging through the heap of mail thoroughly.
"Are you looking for something in particular?" I asked while drying my tears.
It was pointless though, because as soon as my eyes met Sofia's, I started laughing again.
"Why are you two even laughing so hard by the way? You look crazy, both of you."
"Oh boy, you should have been here." I answered with a sigh. "My ribs hurt so bad."
"For me, it's my jaws. Some of these letters are really the weirdest shit I have ever read in my life. I can't even believe it."
"What's worse than usual?" Shane asked after coughing a bit.
Sofia looked at him like he was going to give her his cold and made sure to position her chair further from him before answering.
"Well, first of all there's this girl who wants to eff Mr Fieldman."
"What?"
Shane had said that with a dull tone, while going through the mail again.
"Are you not... surprised?"
I was the surprised one to be honest. Who could stay so calm hearing such news?
"Some people have weird tastes."
"Yeah and talking about weird tastes, you will never guess what kind of letter Jenn received."
Sofia picked up the creepy letter and handed it to him.
"What kind...?" He stopped mid-sentence when he laid eyes on the first verse.
"Notice how creepy it is." She insisted, pointing out to the last few verses.
As he read, Shane blushed harder and harder. And I who thought I was the only one to suffer from the blushing curse. But it was quite funny seeing Shane get all red. He was not a shy type of guy, so I would have never thought I'd see him blush in my life.
Sofia noticed too because she teased him, giggling:
"Uh-ho, you're getting all red, Shane. Do you like what you're reading? What a perv you are..."
"Shut up, okay?"
Both Sofia and I looked at him in shock. We didn't expect this answer.
"I was just joking. What's wrong with you?"
Shane didn't even try and explain himself. He got up, grabbed the creepy letter and left the room as quickly as he arrived, slamming the door behind him.
"Well, he's taking the letter with him. And he didn't deny it either so he must have really liked it." Sofia said with a laugh.
"This guy's so weird, I swear."
