My quads on fire after a particularly grueling practice I braced myself; gritting my teeth and squeezing my eyes tightly closed as I slowly sank into the ice cube filled bathwater which filled the tub.
Letting out a squeak, I dug my fingernails into the palm of my hand waiting for the pain to evolve into numbness.
I could hear Candace, my roommate of three years and girlfriend of two, ordering pizza, from the Little Ceasers' just off campus. Her favorite band was playing softly in the background, they were always playing, those four guys were a much a part of the dorm as the fruit punch I'd spilled on the carpet freshman year.
Closing my eyes and leaning my head back I tried to relax, however was interrupted by my phone buzzing noisily as it vibrated against the tile floor.
Sighing, I shook my hand dry before picking up the device and scanning the screen.
"Hey Can?" I called out.
"Yeah?" she called out.
"You want to go to a party later?"
"It's a Wednesday."
"Back to school rager at the frat house."
"Gross, I'm good. I'm going to get the pizza, you need anything?"
"Coffee, please, I have a ton of homework."
"Already?"
"It's chemistry."
"Oh, so you're trying not to fail it.... again."
Annoyed I opened my mouth to make a rebuttal, however she was already gone, shouting "Love ya" over her shoulder.
My irritation melting to adoration, I once again leaned back closing my eyes and settling into the agonizingly icy water.
What felt only like minutes later I heard the front door open with a creak.
"Are you back already?" I called out.
I revived no answer.
"Candace?"
Silence.
Becoming uneasy, I rose to my feet and grabbing my towel off the toilet wrapped it around myself.
Shivering at the cold air, I hurriedly walked across the icy tiles to the warm carpet.
"Candace?" I called out.
Suddenly the quiet was shattered by a gut twisting scream.
Feeling sick, I stood petrified, unsure of what to do and then I became very aware that I wasn't alone. I had time only to whirl around, a scream working it's way up to my throat and freezing there. And then I was falling to the carpet, hating the familiar face looking down at me.
