"adelaide? why do you have that?" ashton gestured to the cigarette in her hand. she just shook her head.
ashton climbed over the counter and walked towards her. her cheeks were flushed and her eyes were glassy.
"baby give me that," ashton put his hand out. she timidly placed it in his hand. she wiped at her eyes and pushed on her head, releasing a shaky breath.
she shook her head repeatedly before looking up at him. she still had a glassy look and a shaken expression. he placed the cigarette in the ash tray on the counter before pulling her wrists toward the counter.
"Ashton," she whispered as she sat down.
"what? what's wrong? doll are you okay?" ashton said quietly as he fixed her a cup of water. he placed it on the counter in front of her and looked at her intently.
"im afraid ive done a horribly stupid thing," she hummed as she fiddled with the straw. he noted her bruised knuckles and swollen lip.
"adi what happened? you can tell me," Ashton said. he watched as she bit her lip and took a deep breath.
"i made my father very upset," she said looking down at her hands, "and he hit me."
he gently lifted her chin with his hand and looked into her eyes. ashton shook his head and felt his eyes brim with tears. why would anyone ever want to hurt her?
"baby, where? are you okay?" he say very quietly and stroke her hair back. she calmed down a bit before fiddling with her fingers.
"right here," she said and turned her head to the side. a dark bruise was forming on her jaw and he clenched his in anger.
"why would he ever do that to you? oh adelaide im sorry," ashton rubs her cheek softly and she lets out a tiny whimper.
"he was drunk and i talked back to him, so he hit me. and," she paused and looked up at him with an embarrassed look, "he kicked me out."
his face went blank and she let out a tear. ashton shook his head.
"you're gonna stay with me then, okay? you can't go back there right now," he watched as her dirtied face lit up a bit and then sank.
"i don't want to be a bother," she sighed and shook her head. i smiled.
"you're never a bother, Adelaide. let me take care of you," ashton bit his lip hoping that hd didn't sound creepy.
"promise?" adi smiled daintily.
"promise." ashton nodded as adi engulfed him in one of her little hugs.
