I left the airport with nothing but a black suitcase and just enough yen to get me to my aunt's apartment. I had just graduated high school in a small town just outside Chicago. I had always wanted to visit Japan, and now I was living in Chiba!
My aunt was married to a Japanese doctor. She had offered me a place to stay near their house. She had also offered me the job of babysitting her kids whenever they needed me to.
My Aunt Grace and Uncle Kenji had two kids, an eight year old boy named Toru and a six year old girl named Lily.
I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and looked at my aunt's instructions. I found the corresponding monorail and got on with the last if my money.
The monorail dropped me off a mile away from Aunt Grace's house, so I decided to walk. When I reached the house, my aunt and cousins were waiting for me.
"Kitty!!" Lily and Toru ran out to meet me. I picked Lily up and spun her around before ruffling Toru's soft hair. Both kids looked a lot like their father, with straight black hair and almond shaped eyes. I had only ever seen them over video chats, so they were super excited to see me.
"Katelynn," my Aunt Grace walked over and hugged me. I hugged her back and handed her Lily, "I haven't seen you since you were about Toru's age!"
"Is Uncle Kenji here?" I asked. Toru took my hand as we walked back to the house.
"No, dear, he's working. He won't be back until late tonight."
I figured, but I thought I would ask anyway.
My aunt looks a lot like my mom, wavy, long, light brown hair and green eyes. Although my aunt's eyes were a shade darker than her sister's. Aunt Grace kept her hair back with a white bandana and wore her gardening outfit, a dark green shirt, gloves, dirty old jeans, and work boots.
"Do you want to go swimming later?" Toru bounced along next to me.
Aunt Grace laughed, "Little Toru has been obsessed with swimming ever since he learned how to last summer.
I chuckled as well, "Maybe later, Toru, I don't even have a swimming suit."
I spent the rest of the day with my family before Aunt Grace showed me my new apartment.
Three weeks later
I was watching the news when I got a call on my cell. I jumped off the leather couch and grabbed my phone off the kitchen table.
"Hello, Katelynn Nelson here."
"Hi," a male voice answered me, "are you the girl with the 'maid for hire' ad in the newspaper."
I smiled, I had put that ad in the paper almost two weeks ago, "Yes."
I heard rustling papers on the other end of the line, "When can you start working?"
"Um..." I grabbed a pen and note pad, "Anytime you need me."
"How about... Monday?"
I scribbled 'Monday' on the notepad, "Where do you live?"
The boy gave me his address, "When you get there, ask for Cole. Oh, and be there by 10am."
"Alright," I finished writing, "I'll see you Monday, have a nice day!"
I looked at my calendar and saw it was Friday. I wrote the address and time on the Monday square.
My phone alarm woke me up on Monday morning at 7am. I showered quickly, using my strawberry scented shampoo and body wash. I ate breakfast in my underwear in my room. After that I slipped on my white sweater that exposed her left shoulder and had a back smiley face made of hearts and words on the front. I also put on black skinny jeans and white high tops. I brushed my wavy brown hair to the right side until it was a little flatter.
It was 9am when I left, and I still had a half hour ride to Cole's house. I arrived at a large gated community.
"What business do you have here?" A guard asked her.
"Um, I'm looking for someone named Cole," I showed the guard my note.
The man pointed at the largest building in the cul de sac, "That is the Daitan mansion. Their son's name is Cole."
"Thank you, sir!" I waved as I entered the gate.
I rang the doorbell. An old butler with glasses, a comb over, and a white mustache answered the door.
"May I help you, child?" The butler asked.
"I'm the new maid, Katelynn Nelson."
"Ah yes, Master Cole said you would be coming around this time. Come inside,"
I walked into the mansion.
"Who is it, Mr. Yumaki?" A familiar voice came from a side door.
A tall Asian American boy with straight black hair that covered one of his crystal blue eyes leaned against a doorframe. He looked like he was about my age.
He pushed off the doorframe and walked over to shake my hand. He was a head taller than me at least.
"Cole Daitan," I took his hand shyly. He was quite attractive to say the least.
"Katelynn Nelson, but my friends just call me Kitty."
"Kitty? That's adorable!"
I giggled, "Thank you."
Cole grinned, "Follow me, I'll show you to your room."
"Wait, I will be living here in the mansion?"
"Yes, during the week. You have the weekends off."
"Oh OK, sounds good."
Cole brought me to a separate wing of the mansion. It had a few floors and acted as a mini house for the staff. My room was on the second floor. Cole told me I shared the room with another young lady. He handed me a maid outfit with a black corset and skirt with white frills and apron. It also came with a little white headband, thigh high white socks, and black flats.
The door suddenly opened and my new roommate, a woman a year or two older than me with dyed green hair, walked in, "Oh, I'm sorry, Master Cole, I didn't realize you were here!"
The girl bowed respectively.
"Kitty, this is Wolfie, ironically enough..."
"Nice to meet you, Wolfie."
"Likewise!" The girl waved at me and grinned wildly.
"Cole!!" A shout came from downstairs.
Cole grimaced and yelled back, "Hold on a second!" He turned to me, "I have to go, get dressed and meet me in the dining room, Wolfie can show you were it is."
Wolfie nodded and Cole fled the room.
