Wolfie shook me awake the next morning, "Come on, lazy bones, let's gooo!"
Wolfie almost rolled my out of the bed, "I'm up! I'm up!" I yelped.
I let her drag me into the bathroom and shove clothes into my hands.
I showered and dressed as fast as I could. Wolfie had given me a white sports bra, matching white panties, a dark gray hoodie with a large black pocket and hood, dark blue skinny jeans, and black converse.
Wolfie was wearing a green sweater that matched her hair color and black leggings with black combat boots.
"Are you ready?" Wolfie hops from foot to foot.
"Just give me a sec to get the list and we can go."
Wolfie groans but waits on the bed.
Cole is still half asleep when I knocked on his door.
"Come in," Cole said groggily.
I opened the door as quietly as I could so I didn't wake him. I found the list on his desk as well as a credit card.
Wolfie jumped off the bed when she saw me, eager to go, "Yay! Adventure time!"
I laughed and we left the mansion arm in arm. We practically ran down the street.
I pulled out the list from my back pocket, "So first, we need one large birthday cake and enough small ones and cupcakes for at least 150 people. Next, we need varying templates for party invites. After that is balloons, streamers, and other assorted party favors. Finally... A single 5x3 inch picture frame."
We went to a highly recommended pastry chef for the dessert, "We need a large birthday cake for a Mr. Cole Daitan. He's turning 21."
"I have a great idea, then," the chef grinned, "Anything else I can do for you fine ladies?"
"We also need enough cupcakes to feed 150 rich adults," Wolfie said.
"And we need these for next Saturday," I added.
We found multicolored balloons and streamers at a small party store. Wolfie also bought several strings of small white lights and I picked out a birthday banner.
"Should we also get some alcohol since Master Cole is turning 21?" Wolfie asked.
I agreed, "And maybe some lemonade in case someone doesn't want anything like that."
"Or if they are too young," Wolfie bumped my shoulder with hers and we both laughed.
We purchased all the drinks from a popular brewery.
"Why do we need a single picture frame?" Wolfie took the list from me.
I gave a half smile, "An inside joke."
Wolfie pouted but let it go.
Back at the mansion, Master Daitan was yelling at a young maid. The maid's stomach was quite prominent for such a petit girl. I realized she was pregnant.
Wolfie and I ducked our heads and proceeded to our room. We changed into our uniforms and got to work.
I took the picture frame to Cole. It was made of fake wood and was engraved with the words "best friends".
Cole ran his fingers over the engraving and smiled, "Thank you, Kitty."
"It was no trouble, sir," I bowed. I placed the new picture frame where the old one had been.
Cole watched me from the door.
"You know," he said suddenly, "I really don't want to marry that Aika girl. My father is power hungry and is just setting this up to benefit himself."
I didn't say anything.
"I'd rather marry anyone else," Cole leaned against a wall, "even you."
I blushed.
"Sorry! That came out ruder than I intended. You're a good girl, Kitty, I would hate to see anything bad happen to you."
I cocked my head to one side, "What do you mean?"
"Nothing," Cole shook his head, "just forget I said anything. You can go now."
I reluctantly nodded and bowed again before leaving.
Saturday, Before the Party
Everyone was bustling around the mansion. We were all scrambling to get ready. I was helping Cole dress. He wore a simple black suit and matching tie. His cufflinks were pure gold with tiny diamonds set in them.
"Are you wearing that maid uniform to my party?" Cole's gaze bore into me.
I focused on tying his tie, "Yes, sir. I will still be working tonight."
Cole frowned, "Aren't you supposed to go home on weekends?"
"I don't mind staying," I insisted. I finished with the tie, "is it too tight, sir?"
"It's fine, thanks, Kitty. And I want you to take tonight off and come as my guest, you can even bring a plus one." He of course meant Wolfie.
"Thank you, sir, but I don't have anything to wear."
Cole slipped five 100 dollar bills into my hand, "Go buy yourself something nice."
He winked at me. My mouth fell open, "Are you sure this is OK, sir? I don't want you getting in trouble with your father."
Cole let out a bark of sarcastic laughter, "My old man doesn't scare me, now have fun tonight. You deserve it."
Wolfie almost made me go deaf with her ecstatic screams. She agreed to take me dress shopping.
I settled on a long red dress that hugged my form. It was backless, and the front was held up by a connecting gold band around my neck. A thin belt of braided gold cloth snaked around my waist. Red gloves rose up above my elbows. My shoes were gold with rubies inlaid in them. Wolfie insisted I also buy a tiny gold pure for appearance sake. The whole ensemble cost almost all of my $500. Wolfie offered to do my hair and makeup for the night to save money.
Wolfie plaited my bangs and stuck the rest of my hair in a simple but lovely bun. She applied heavy gold eye-shadow, red eye liner, and red lipstick. She used a special mascara she had recently gotten to make my eyes stand out even more. The gold brought out the green in my hazel eyes. By the time Wolfie finished, I almost didn't recognize myself. I brought a hand to my face, amazed.
Wolfie gasped and grabbed my hand, "Honey we must do something about those nails!"
Wolfie painted four fingers on each hand a rich red and both my ring fingers a bright gold.
She stepped back to admire her work, "You look so beautiful! I feel like a mother sending her daughter off to prom!"
I laughed and embraced Wolfie.
She laughed too, "Now go, I'll meet you at the party after I get ready!"
