I regret telling Akira that I can't talk. For various reasons.
Reason 1) She's now forcing me to enter a public place so she can buy me a notebook.
Reason 2) She will not stop talking.
I mean, before she would ask questions, and then would go silent when I didn't answer. However now, she just talks and talks and talks!
And that stupid thing won't stop glaring at me. Ever since she brought him in, he's been watching me like a freaking hawk. "Lucifurr". That thing is no cat.
"So long story short, I refuse to be seen with Marissa anymore. Serves her right, that prissy little rich girl." I have no idea what she's talking about. "Anyways Bane, what color should the notebook be?"
We were pulling into the parking lot of a shiny Wal-Mart. People were everywhere.
"Bane?" Shaking my head, I pulled the hood of my black hoodie (loaned to me by Akira) up. "Oh right. No voice. Oops." She hopped out of the car. "Come on, slowpoke."
I scrambled out and followed her into the store slowly. She expertly made her way down aisles, which all seemed too much like maze to me. She continued walking for a little while, before stopping in front of a shelf covered in notebooks of all kinds.
"Let's see.... I can see you using a black notebook, but white would work too. Hmm..." I stayed back a little, hoping she would hurry up and decide. All these people were starting to freak me out.
I turned to the side, noticing a family of four. The mother was pushing the cart, which held a little girl who looked to be about four years old. Standing next to the mom was the dad, who had his arm gently resting on her shoulder. Riding the end of the cart was a little boy, probably eight. He met my eyes, and his face morphed from a smile to a horrified grimace.
I turned away, but what was done was done. I heard the boy and his family in the background, and I just wanted to leave.
I looked over to the notebooks, but Akira was gone.
Shit. Shit. What the hell am I supposed to do now?
I started making my way through the maze, keeping my head as far down as possible. I couldn't find the exit, but then it suddenly appeared in front of me, and I rushed towards it. Making my way towards the car, I scanned the area for Akira. Why would she leave like that?
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a big man making his way down an alley a few blocks down. There was something sinister about his smile, and it seemed as if it were a permanent ornament adorned upon his stony face.
Then I spotted it. Just a flash, but it was there. Akira's jacket.
I made my way towards the man without a second thought. Thinking back now, things would have been so much easier had I stayed away. Why couldn't I have just left that bright girl the moment I met her?
I walked down the alley slowly. It looked like it was a dead end, but as I got closer I realized it branched off into two smaller alleys on each side. I went left.
I kept walking, but then I started to see something. It was in a little trail on the ground, dark and ominous. It started to show up more as I continued walking, and with a jolt I realized what it was.
Blood.
