I watch my best friend, Beatrice Prior, get her hair cut by her mother, Natalie. My mother passed away when I was 7 so it's just me and my dad. But he isn't too good at cutting hair so Natalie said she'd do my hair for me. I look away as Natalie looks at me through the mirror. That's a major rule in Abnegation. Looking in mirrors to fix your hair or anything like that for very long is called vanity. Which is a type of selfishness. So on the second day of every third month, we get our hair cut and see our reflection whilst getting our hair done. But we never look for more than three seconds.

"How have you been, Kaitlyn?" Natalie asks as she trims Beatrice's hair. I look at the floor.

"I've been doing well. Thank you. How have you been?" I ask.

"Well enough." She replies as she finishes Beatrice's hair by twisting it back into a knot. She catches Beatrice looking at herself and smiles.

"So today's the day, huh?" Natalie sighs.

"Yes." Beatrice replies.

"Are either of you nervous?" Natalie asks.

"No. The test doesn't alter our choice." Beatrice replies. I smile lightly at Natalie.

"No. Whatever the test gives me. I'll choose it." I tell her. She nods.

"Good." Natalie says and kisses Beatrice's cheek. Beatrice stands up and I take her place on the stool. She brushes out my hair before gently snipping away at the ends of my hair.

"You look so much like your mother you know." Natalie tells me. I glance at my reflection for a few seconds, taking in my light brown hair, pale skin, large chocolate eyes, perky nose, and arched eyebrows.

"Really?" I ask. Natalie smiles at me through the mirror.

"Yes. I was friends with your mother since I was a little girl. And I hope the same will go for you and Beatrice." Natalie says softly. Hearing this causes a smile to spread across my lips.

"Natalie can I ask you something?" I say quietly. She nods as she pulls my hair back into a knot.

"Were you always Abnegation or were you a transfer?" I ask. She stiffens.

"I was always Abnegation." She replies hesitantly. I smile.

"Are you happy here?" I ask. Natalie nods with a smile growing.

"Of course I am." She tells me. I nod.

"That's good." I reply and glance at myself one last time as Natalie slides the panel back over the mirror.

"Natalie I have one more question." I say.

"What is it?" Natalie asks as she sweeps up the hair on the floor.

"Does my dad's brother have any kids?" I ask as I stand up.

"Yes. A daughter. Her name is Megan I think. Oh and a younger son named Jake." Natalie replies.

"Thank you." I say. She smiles at me and nods.

"Beatrice! Kaitlyn! We better go catch the bus to school!" Beatrice's older brother, Caleb, calls to us.

"Coming!" We call back. I follow her down to Caleb. We hurry out to the bus and sit. A Candor man walks onto the bus and Caleb offers him his seat. Which doesn't shock me or Beatrice. Caleb is more Abnegation than both of us combined. If he chose any other faction, I wouldn't know who he was anymore. Soon enough we arrive at the school and get in line with the other Abnegation. I see a Candor boy bullying an Abnegation boy.

"Beatrice. No."" Caleb says, keeping his sister back. I storm over to the boys and stand between them.

"Hey! Leave him alone!" I snap. The Candor boy snickers.

"What're you gonna do about it little Stiff girl?" He asks. I kick him in the shin. Everyone around me watch in shock as he winces and rubs his shin.

"Feisty. I like it. See you later." The Candor boy says and walks away. I look at the Abnegation boy.

"You okay?" I ask. He nods.

"Thanks." He says quietly. I glare at the way the Candor boy went. Caleb and Beatrice make their way over to me.

"That wasn't very kind of you." Caleb scolds me.

"I was defending this poor boy!" I exclaim.

"That doesn't matter. You could've gotten into serious trouble." Caleb says.

"That isn't very Abnegation of you to say, Caleb." I scold back. He flinches and looks at the ground.

"I know. I'm sorry." Caleb apologizes. I sigh.

"It's alright Caleb." I forgive him. He smiles at me. We soon enter the school and go to our usual table to wait. But sadly since my last name begins with a D, I'm one of the first people to go in.

"Kaitlyn Daniels." A female voice says. I stand up and follow a woman with an eagle tattoo on the back of her neck to a room full of mirrors. I look at myself curiously. Was I always tall and skinny?

"Hmm. You're not like the usual Abnegation. Don't you people look away from mirrors because of vanity or whatever?" The woman asks.

"Yeah. But I've never seen myself in a full length mirror. I was merely curious." I reply.

"You're an odd one. Alright let's get this over with. By the way I'm Tori." She says and gestures to the chair beside her. I sit down.

"Kaitlyn." I reply.

"I know. Why else would I have said your name earlier?" She asks before injecting something into my neck.

--Time Lapse To After The Test--

"You need to go home." Tori says as soon as I wake up.

"What? What were my results?" I ask.

"Abnegation." She replies hesitantly. I narrow my eyes at her.

"What...were...my...results?" I ask through gritted teeth.

"Abnegation...and Erudite and Dauntless." Tori replies. I raise an eyebrow.

"So that means..?" I wonder.

"It means your results were inconclusive. Jeez, and the test put Erudite as a result? You're Divergent. You fit into more than one Faction. I'll put your result as Abnegation. Now go home and remember not to tell anyone. Understood?" Tori asks. I nod before leaving. I go home and my dad looks at me in confusion when I enter the dining room.

"You're home early." He states.

"I got sick during the test so they sent me home early." I reply.

"Oh. Are you alright? Do you need medicine?" Dad asks worriedly.

"No I'm fine. Thanks, Dad. I'll make dinner." I say before heading to the kitchen. I start cutting up some carrots for the soup. I don't belong in Abnegation. I may love my father and the Prior family. But this is just not me. I want excitement. I want to be able to be free. Dauntless is where I belong. I know my choice now.
