There is a certain type of software known as operating systems. I like to think of operating systems as the software foundation. Without them, you wouldn't be able to use browsers or play games or watch videos, etc..
The most popular operating systems are:
Windows
Mac OS X
Linux (don't worry if you've never heard of it)
Android
iOS
Operating systems are on all types of devices, not just computers, which is why Android and iOS are listed.
As far as PC gaming goes, Windows has the best compatibility, but there are still ways to play games on Mac OS X, as well as Linux. I will cover these methods later.
