I ran up the stairs, almost tripping on my laces and dashed into my room. I did as Craig said, and slammed the door shut, locking it. My heart was racing, my palms sweating. I leant against the door, and slid down it to the floor.

I tried to calm myself by taking a few deep breaths, but it didn't work. I needed to know what was happening downstairs, but I had promised Craig to stay locked in my room. I didn't want to break my brother's trust, so I took one last deep breath, and pressed my ear to the ground, hoping to hear something, anything.

I heard shouting. Muffled shouting. It wasn't Craig's voice, it was Dad's. I heard the sound of ripping paper, and flinched. That was my school report.

That stupid piece of paper is why Dad is so angry.

Today, mid term reports had been sent home. I knew mine was terrible. I knew I had Fs in almost every subject. That's why I ran home. I didn't wait for the bus, it was taking far too long. I ran, thinking it was quicker. It wasn't. I got home, and instantly checked the mailbox. It was empty. My report wasn't there, neither was Craig's.

I had waited outside, sat on the curb watching as cars flew past me. I waited for Craig to come home, I didn't know what I was supposed to do. Craig would know, he always did. He was the one who came up with the plan to hide our reports. It was easy, get home before Mum had checked the mail box. Usually, we had quite a lot of time to get the letters.

Obviously, Mum hadn't been drinking as much today.

When Craig reached me, he saw the look on my face and already guessed what had happened. He cursed, and took a few deep breaths. Then, he grabbed my hand and pulled me up from the ground.

He told me it would be fine, and I trusted him. He was my older brother. He was one of the only people who looked out for me.

We entered the house, and we saw that Mum had our reports. They were laid out on the dinning table, next to a bottle of red wine. The bottle was half empty. Mum held a glass in her hand, casually sipping from it. Her cheeks were red from the drink. Dad was sat across from her, his face also red, but it was clear he hadn't been drinking.

It was very clear they had seen the reports. Dad looked between us, he looked like he was trying to keep calm. He asked us a question.

Who got As and who got Fs?

His voice was void of any emotion, and he looked at us sternly, his fists clenched. He had given up trying to be calm because of how long it was taking us to answer. He asked again, his voice louder.

I decided to speak and say that I got Fs, but Craig spoke before me.

"I got Fs." He had said, looking down. Dads eyes bulged out of their sockets, and he stood up from the table. His chair scraped against the floor, making Craig flinch.

"You got As Ruby?" Mum had butted in, making it even worse for Craig, "we can finally have a Tucker that doesn't fail in life!" She laughed drunkly, and my Dad then slammed his fists onto the table. The bottle of wine toppled over, and spilled onto the floor, staining it blood red.

That's when Craig told me to run upstairs. He told me to lock myself in my room and not come out. So I have.

With my mind blank, I listened closely to anything going on downstairs.

My Mum's drunk cackles, my Dad's shouts. I couldn't hear anything from Craig. He hadn't spoken a word since he took the blame for my Fs.

Then, I heard the smash of glass. I flinched, and tried to pick up any whimpers, yelps or shouts of pain from Craig, nothing.

My Dad shouted more, but my Mum had gone silent. I let out a breath I hadn't realised I'd been holding, and sat up.

I wanted to cry, the tears wanted to spill from the corners of my eyes and not stop. But I won't cry. No, I've got to stay strong, not just for me, but for my brother.

I've realised this plot could also be perfect for the McCormick's, but I prefer to Tucker family
