Chapter Twelve

           After that bombshell, I explained to Klaus that I had to go back to the Salvatore's to get the rest of my things. He wanted to go with me but I had to do this on my own. A part of me wanted to move in with him, but the other wanted to stay with Stefan...

           I walk up to the front door, but before I can knock, Stefan comes out. He nods toward the woods as I follow. Once we get far enough away from the house, he begins to talk. "I figured you wouldn't want Damon to hear your secret."

           I raise an eyebrow. "Secret?"

           "Well, you're keeping it from me, so you must not want anyone else to know... Did you take care of Esther?"

           I nod. "Yes, she's gone... Look, the only reason I didn't tell you everything was because I didn't have time to explain. Now, I do, but only if you're willing to listen."

          He sits down on a fallen tree as I stand in front of him. "I'm listening."

           I take a deep breath. "Before Esther came, the rest of Klaus' siblings showed up. They were there to warn him that Esther was alive and she wanted to kill them. She didn't mean to create such evil when she turned them into vampires and she intended to destroy them, but mostly, she just wanted to destroy Klaus. Esther was the one that told Elijah, all those centuries ago, to wipe our memory. She had no idea that the bond had been awoken."

           "But can't she see visions?"

           "The bond blocked her from seeing anything related to Klaus and I. When she arrived, she was shocked, or at least acted as if she was. That was when we got Bonnie involved. In order to kill us, Esther had to kill the bond, and no one knew if that was possible. So, Bonnie took us to the witch house and summoned Sheila. She said there was always a back door to every spell, but if Esther did succeed, it would kill her, so all we had to do was kill her first."

           He shakes his head. "For some reason, I don't think any of this is your secret."

           "I'm almost there... When we were leaving the house, I looked back and saw a figure. It was Emily's ghost. She wanted me to go back inside but Bonnie told me to forget about her and we went home. I happened to have mentioned it to Elijah and turned out, he had been seeing her too, but no one else could. She only appeared to us. So, we went back to the house for a visit with her. She told me not only was I bonded to Klaus but that I was also bonded to Elijah."

           That definitely got his attention. "What? You can't be bonded to two people!"

           "Exactly. She said Mother Nature wasn't too sure about Klaus because he was so evil. She wanted to make sure I would have a soul mate if Klaus didn't complete the bond and that person was Elijah."

           "But Klaus did complete the bond... Didn't he?"

           "Remember when Elijah showed me a few of my memories?"

           He nods. "He showed you before Klaus..."

           "Yes, and now Elijah's bond is maturing and Klaus' is dying."

           "What happens when it does?"

           "Klaus will die... Emotionally. He could become a monster again, but Emily said if we killed Esther, we would have a chance to save the bond, which is why I'm moving in with them..."
