We were told to leave all our luggage, and animals... on the train because they would be taken to our rooms once we got sorted. I was walking with both Ron and Harry in a crowd of first years.
"First years foller me!Come on first years this way!" called out Hagrid repeatedly. Harry, Ron, and I walked up to Hagird.
Harry and I said,"Hi Hagrid!"
"Whoa..." Said Ron in complete awe of Hagrids overbearing size.
Hagrid then led us down rocky stairs to where a bunch of boats were waiting for us on a lake. When I first saw the castle I was in complete amazement. I couldn't believe that I was going to go to school in a place so massive. Then again I also couldn't believe that I was still a witch. I got in one of the boats and sat in between Ron and Harry. A couple other first years got in the same boat as us and once everyone got into a boat, they started rowing themselves. The closer we got t the castle the more incredible it became. Everyone was speechless as they just stared in awe at the castle, emotions probably overcoming them as it happened to me. Once the boats docked, we walked inside the castle and through multiple corridors. We took many turns, and had to walk up a lot of stairs until we reached a door with professor McGonagall infront of it. My eyes widened and I smiled recognizing here from the Three Broomsticks. I however decided not to say anything not wanting to draw any attention to myself.
"Welcome to Hogwarts." She said to all of the first years. "Now, in a few moments, you will pass through these doors and join your classmates, but before you can take your seats, you must be sorted into your houses. There's Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin."
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Draco smirk at the mention of the Slytherin. I knew for a fact that he wanted that house. I think he said his whole family had been in that house. I giggled slightly at the thought of his face if he didn't get into my house.
"Now while you're here," she continued, "your house will be like your family. Your triumphs will earn you points, but any rule breaking and you will loose points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points will be awarded the House Cup."
Right as she finished saying that a boy called out when he saw his toad at the front of the crowd. "Trevor!" He called out in delight as he quickly picked up the toad and then looked up meekly at professor McGonagall. "Sorry..." he said shyly and went back into the crowd.
She shot him a glare, but said nothing about the matter. Instead, she continued with what she was about to say. "The Sorting Ceremony will begin shortly." With that she turned around and walked away through the doors.
"How exactly do they sort us into houses?" I heard Harry ask Ron and I listened in anxiously.
"Some sort of test I think. Fred said it hurts a lot, but I think he was just joking."
My heart dropped to my stomach. I wasn't nervous or afraid of crowds, but how could they make us do a test when we haven't even learned magic yet! I don't know how any of this works yet. I thought to myself completely terrified fearing for when professor McGonagall would come back and before I knew it she did.
"We are ready for you now. Follow me." She lead us through the doors and before us stood four very large, very long tables filled with students, but had many empty seat. The houses must sit at separate tables, I thought. I looked up and was amazed to see floating candle sticks and the night sky above us.
"Its not real, the ceiling, its just bewitched to look like the night sky. I read about it in Hogwarts a History." I heard Hermione say behind me. Was I supposed to know about this stuff? I would have read the books I bought from Diagon Alley before today if I had known. We had stopped just before a platform that had all the teachers on it sitting at a table. There was also a hat sitting on a stool before us.
