Chapter Five - Our Life Ahead

On their glorious ride back to the base, Hanji and Levi agreed to keep their relationship a secret. At least until they felt ready to tell everyone. It was more for Levi's sake just because he had a reputation to uphold. He was grinning like an idiot but just as the base came into view his face returned back to its usual bleakness, although with a slight sparkle in his eye.
This made Hanji smile.

"Levi, Hanji, there you are" Erwin said as he looked over to them as they took their places at the head table in the food hall. He noticed that Levi sat rather close to Hanji and he was prompted to ask them what had happened on their day out but alas, he remained quiet. As they all ate, Erwin also noticed that Levi and Hanji were talking quite peacefully, this unusual behavior all but confirmed his suspicion and so he elected to question them on this matter. "Ehem, Levi, Hanji. Is there something you wish to share with us?".

"I uh..." Levi began. Hanji jumped in and said "Oh no nothing Erwin, nothing's going on".
Hanji was a terrible liar.
"I see" Erwin concluded, he slowly reached over to touch Hanji's hand but before he could get there Levi, quick as a flash,  smacked his hand out of the way and placed it over Hanji's hand instead. With a small smirk and a assertive nod, Erwin went back to his soup feeling victorious. "So, they finally got together" he thought smugly. 

"Good"

As they got up to leave after dinner, Levi noticed how many of the men there stared at Hanji, although he felt it was too early to become official, he felt a pinch of jealousy and so he put his arm around Hanji's waist so that those spying eyes caught wind that Hanji was his. He heard some reaction to this and it made him smirk. This time it was Hanji who felt embarrassed. She wasn't used to this, she had never been in a relationship before. 
In fact, the kiss she and Levi shared today was her first kiss!

Later that evening, Hanji heard a solid knock on her door. "Come in!" she said loudly. The door opened and Levi was there. He took her hand with a surprisingly gentle grip and led her outside to the roof of the building. The sky was clear and the stars were visible. 
It was beautiful.

Levi sat down and pulled Hanji with him, they huddled close and Levi whispered "Look up Hanji, look at the stars". Hanji looked up and was greeted by a dazzling sight. The stars were extremely bright and ever so beautiful. "When I first joined the scouts/survey corps/etc. I came up here with Isabel and Farlan. We had never seen the stars, we had never been outside. We had seen nothing, Even the clouds were mesmerizing. Seeing the stars always made me smile. When they died, nothing made me smile. Not even the stars. I was always so gloomy, it just became how people saw me" as Levi was saying this, tears were coming to Hanji's eyes.

"But then I met you"
