Rin

Jax stood awkwardly in the middle of the living room. I watched, amused, as she opened her mouth to ask a question before shutting it tightly, remaining silent.

"Jax, just ask already," I said tiredly, and she jumped.

Rubbing her hands together, she kept her eyes on the floor. "So, uh, Rin? That was...who was that exactly?"

Sighing, I flopped onto the couch, motioning for her to come join me. "My biological mother. Well, she's more of an egg donor than a mother anyways."

"Clearly you guys aren't on good terms." She cleared her throat. "Can I ask why?"

I smiled. "Of course you can, you can ask me anything." I took a deep breath. "But yeah, I fucking hate her guts and she hates mine. She's mainly the reason I'm not that great with relationships, and I find it so difficult to develop romantic feelings for people."

"Why?"

"She was honestly a whore. Ever since I was old enough, I worked at odd jobs here and there. I was the only source of income we got, and even that wasn't reliable since I was so young. Most of the money I made she used to buy alcohol and fancy clothes, so I had to hide as much as possible to be able to buy simple things like a small bite to eat. I couldn't even afford water, but luckily some people in a house nearby would leave water bottles outside for homeless people. For people like us.

"She soon realized that I was keeping money from her, and it pissed her off considerably. She beat me to a pulp when she noticed, but that meant I couldn't work anymore so she didn't bother hurting me physically. Someone snitched to the police about an underage child working, so they decided to come investigate our town which left us penniless and starving." I ran a shaky hand through my hair, my eyes burning from memories I had tried to forget.

Jax wiped a tear away. Why was she crying? "And then?" She whispered, eyes wide.

"And then it finally got through to my mom that we needed money, not amazing clothes and alcohol. She was already fucking enough men at this point, she decided charging for it. But then, one man came in and that's when it changed. Hell, we started making money, but he was horrible." I coughed, my lungs closing on me as my voice wobbled. "He was like the devil, yelling and cussing. He treated us like his slaves, but he was our main way of making money so we couldn't fight back. When I was too slow to light his cigarette, he burned me with it. When what little heat we had ran out, he poured oil down my throat and tried to light me on fire. When winter came around and it was freezing cold, he would make me stand outside barefoot in the snow and beg for money like my mother would beg for sex. And he...well, that was that."

Jax placed a warm hand on my knee. "What else did he do?"

I glared at her. "You can ask me anything, but I won't tell you more than that. I'm going to bed."

She flinched, and I immediately felt bad. "Oh, well, alright," she murmured, and sat back.

I wanted to apologize, but the conversation was already over. I got up and walked to my room, collapsing on the bed. Yanking my shoes off, I sat on my butt in the middle, staring at my toes with my knees pulled up to my chest.

An hour later there was a soft knock at the door before Jax's face came into view. I was dozing in and out of sleep at this point, but I sat up when she brought a cup of tea to the side of the bed.

"Jax, I'm sorry-"

"It's okay." She sat beside me and wrapped her arms around my sides. "I shouldn't have asked you all those questions."

I shook my head. "No, I need to tell someone." I rested my head on top of hers and took comfort in her warmth. Even if we weren't exactly romantically involved, I loved being in her presence. She was my best friend.

"You can tell me anything and I won't judge you. You know that Rin," she said quietly, and I took a shaky breath.

"Okay. Well, eventually he demanded I start whoring myself out to. He said it was the least we could do to repay him for buying us a house and feeding us. My mom barely fought him! I was just a child so I couldn't even fight back or defend myself. There was so many of them, male, female, I got them all. If you were a twisted bastard, you came in. Most of them started coming to me, so he raised my price. They said they loved the way I squealed, Jax. Those fucking assholes loved it." Jax squeezed me, and I realized we were both crying, holding on to each other for dear life.

"Do I want to know what happened next?" She asked, and I blew out a stream of air.

"My mother left me for him. He told her stories about a giant mansion and a lot of land, and his only condition was they had to leave me behind in the 'good hands' of his friend. She agreed instantly, and they vanished a few days later. His friend was actually really sweet and treated me more like a daughter than just a way to make money. He told me he didn't want to whore me out, but the man had blackmail on him and if he got wind that I wasn't making money he would hire someone to kill us both.

"It was okay though. Every night he held me and told me amazing stories about a girl named Rin who would go to magic lands and save damsels and even princes in distress. That's how I got my name, Rin. I called myself that every night, telling myself that I would grow up and be just as amazing as her. Those nights with him would wash away all the pain and disgusting things from that day."

"Wow," Jax breathed, and I laughed dryly, burying my nose in her hair and inhaling the smell of green apples before I continued.

"He even gave me my own share of the money, and the man my mother was with didn't even notice. He was happy he just got money at all. My friend told me that he was giving me the money so I could leave one day, and save people just like Rin did. We did this for about a year, maybe two, and every night I looked forward to his stories until they were everything I thought about all day. All the customers were delighted, because my excitement for later 'improved my performance' or some shit."

"But?" Jax slipped her hand into mine and played with our fingers.

"But then my mother's new husband decided to come home, pop in to see how everything was going. He brought someone new home too, someone my age. The storyteller took him in too, and the both of us would sit while he would-"

"Who was it?" Jax interrupted, before flushing. "Sorry."

"It was Evan. That's why we were always so close, you know? But since we were so close that meant I had to stay longer, because I wanted to leave with him.

"But before we could leave, someone must have tipped the Asshole. He arrived the day we decided to escape, and the Storyteller protected us as we ran. He promised he'd be right behind us! He...he promised," I whimpered, and full out sobs wracked my body.

"He didn't make it out, did he?" Jax murmured, and began stroking my hair. She pressed a tender kiss on my temple as I continued trembling in her hold.

I shook my head. "No, he didn't. We did, and that's why Evan and I are here alive and well now.

"But the true hero of my real story didn't have a happily ever after, at all."

Kind of short, but I just wanted to explain why Rin is so romantically detached from her partners and is so unwilling to date anyone. This is also why Evan and Rin are so close.
Normally after Rin breaks up with someone (or vice versa) they never really talk again, but this is why Evan and Rin still communicate and she still feels for him (though not romantically).
Anyways, I hope it made sense, I finished at like 3 in the morning, so enjoy!! Xoxo see you next update!
