Chapter 9 – April 16, 2019

Time went by too quickly before I felt my cell phone buzz in my pocket. I carefully shifted to reach for it, trying not to jostle Diana. She stirred, mumbling. "Nope. Not moving. Too comfy..." I smiled at how cute she was, finally retrieving my phone. The screen lit up with a text from Tim.

"Tim's here. Time to face reality again." Diana groaned reluctantly, but she stood and stretched. I followed suit before giving her a light kiss. She smiled and rubbed her eyes as I headed to the door. Tim's timing was nearly perfect as he knocked a few seconds before I reached the door. Tim smiled with a quick nod as he walked inside.

"I figured out the cloud of dread thing." I heard his footsteps stop just behind me, and I turned once I had the door closed. Tim was looking at Diana. "Whoops, sorry about that, Zane. I didn't know you had company."

He gave me a slightly accusing look as I walked by him. "Don't worry. She knows." Tim had begun walking, and this made him stop again.

"She knows? Why does she know?" Tim leveled his gaze at me, showing that I had not appropriately approached him with this subject.

"She knows because she was there when someone tried to kill us with magic and a fire escape, and instead of being a manipulative liar, Zane trusted me enough to tell me the truth." Diana stared Tim down, arms crossed over her chest to show she didn't appreciate his tone.

Tim looked over at me for a confirmation. I nodded. "And I still trust her." He turned back to Diana, and I could see the tension in his shoulders. Then he shrugged and walked to the kitchen table, dropping into a chair.

"This assault by emergency exit was the stuff you wanted to fill me in on?" I gave Tim a shortened version of the events since last Wednesday. He followed along, equally surprised by James and his claims about Magi.

"And lastly, we don't know how James and his accomplice fit into this new foreboding. We don't even know if she's Magi or human."

Tim gave me an incredulous look. "Did you feel a second Magi or didn't you?" I stared at him for a moment until I reached that "Aha!" moment, promptly slamming my palm into my forehead. Tim laughed, Diana joining shortly after, picking up on the simplicity that I had missed.

"Ok... that makes that way easier than I thought. She's human, and probably knows as much as James when it comes to the Magi." I thought about that, wondering about connections when I looked back at Tim. "You said you figured out the strange feeling that started yesterday?"

Tim nodded, growing serious again. "I went diving after my last class, and it took a while, but I found another instance."

I noticed Diana looking confused by Tim's wording, so I explained. "His genetic memory. His Progenitor is a lot older than mine, so he has more information and memories to work through."

Diana looked back at Tim. "Who's your Progenitor?" Curiosity was obvious in her voice, probably since I had only really talked to her about my family line.

"Alexander III of Macedon." When Diana clearly didn't recognize the less popularized name, Tim amended. "Alexander the Great."

I laughed as Diana's mouth hung open. "I told you that you've already heard of most of them." Diana nodded, slowly working her jaw closed again. I looked back at Tim. "Sorry. What did you find?"
