"I'm going to get you, Archkit!" Raykit purred, nipping her slate-gray ear. She flicked her small tail, ears swiveling.
It had been two moons after the kits' birth, and Specklemist could barely keep up with her growing kits. They had opened their eyes, Archkit a light brown, and Raykit a brilliant copper.
Archkit jumped back, sticking her small pink nose in the air, with a dignified expression. "You could never get me! I'm Archstar! Evil leader of EvilClan!" She joked, and sprang at her sister. She put her small speckled paws on her sister's mouth.
"No!" Raykit grunted, although, her grunt was very muffled by the covering of paws on her mouth. She squeaked in defiance, and shook her head, Archkit's paws dropping to the moss-covered floor.
"Ha!" Raykit smiled.
"Hey!" Archkit huffed, and sat on the floor with a thump.
Specklemist looked up, and saw another queen hobbling over to her and her kits. Her pupils dilated, as she saw the queen was carrying a mewling kit. She nudged Archkit and Raykit close to her, wrapping her tortoiseshell tail around them.
The queen appeared to be a brown and gray cat. Rabbitleaf.
"Oh, um- Good morning, Rabbitleaf! What an excellent dawn, hm?" Specklemist greeted shakily, stumbling on her words.
Rabbitleaf blinked her golden eyes, but nodded. "Yes." She mewed quickly, giving off a small smile. "Well, I would stay and talk-" She paused, going into a coughing fit. When she finished, she looked up again, as if seeing if Specklemist was still there. "But I have something important to address..."
Archkit peeked out from under her mother's wrapped tail, and then averted her gaze to her curious sister, Raykit. She gave Raykit a look, as if to say, 'be quiet.' Raykit stifled a giggle, but Archkit looked unamused. She nudged Raykit in the side.
Specklemist sighed and looked down at her kits, and gaped her mouth open, to say something to her kittens. But she restrained herself, knowing it would just take longer to get to the point. She wrapped her tail tighter around the kits, and looked up again. "Address what?" She questioned.
"Well, I have this kit..." Rabbitleaf murmured, touching a silver and tan kit. "His name is-" she actually never choose a name for the tom-kit, and had to think of one off the top of her head. A bird's whistle could be heard.
"Starlingkit." She mewed quickly. "His name is Starlingkit."
Specklemist purred, and tilted her head. "Alright. A nice name."
"Well... I can't take this kit. He- I'm- I am so sick..." She mewed weakly. "And I am sure to die. I don't want my kit to be motherless." She quickened her tone, her breathing harsh. "Make sure he doesn't know he is adopted... And- and!" The she-cat collapsed to the floor, flanks heaving.Specklemist sprung up, quickly going over to the she-cat. "Rabbitleaf?! Falconmint!" She called. While waiting for Falconmint, Rabbitleaf tried to say something. "The kit deserves better than... This..."
Then the muscular medicine cat raced into the room, carrying herbs. He looked around. "Great StarClan!" He trotted over to Rabbitleaf, and looked her over.
Rabbitleaf's gold eyes rolled to the back of her head, her mouth open, as if gasping for air. She convulsed once, then twice, and laid still. Her last breathe escaped her frail body, her eyes glazing over, and only the white parts showed. It looked deathly terrifying, and Specklemist quickly lead her kits to the back of the nursery. She then grabbed Starlingkit, and dropped him in front of the two she-kits. She then looked back, and saw Falconmint, dragging Rabbitleaf's body out of the den. He was careless, as he never really cared for the she-cat.Specklemist's pupils grew back to normal size, and hoped her kits did not see the horrifying scene that laid before them a few heartbeats ago. "Well..." She never really liked Rabbitleaf herself, but knew she had to care for this helpless kit. "Meet your new brother. His name is Starlingkit."
Archkit smiled with delight, totally unfazed by the sudden death. "A brother?! Yes!" She peered over, and saw the squirming kit.
Raykit sighed. "Cool." She looked away slightly.
Specklemist nodded. "Now. He is adopted. Never reveal anything about this. He will be one of us. Hear me?!"
Raykit nodded. "Yes, mother." She wrapped her tail around her small paws, pink nose sniffling.
Archkit looked up at her mother, with a coffee-colored gaze. "I promise, mother." She smiled, staring into her mother's eyes. "I promise..."Ha! That was a fun chapter to write! XD How'd you like it? Specklemist is so calm in my opinion. X3
