Evolution and Selection

Yay evolution! Not really. You probably think this part of the biology class is really boring but you know you need to know it so you are reading this. 

What is evolution anyway? It is basically the change in allele frequency in a population over the course of time. 

When you think of evolution, you might think of people evolving from apes. Sometimes your teacher will teach you different so check with your teacher on that. Above is a crash course video about evolution to help you understand what the actual fuck is going on. 

Now that you know what evolution is, you have to learn about the mechanisms of evolution. Rest in pepperonis. I know. Gross. 

Genetic drift (small populations)

Non random mating (sexual selection)

Mutation (can be good or bad)

Migration (gene flow)

Natural selection (adaptation) 

Types of selection include:

Natural selection-adaptation

Sexual- non random mating

Directional- toward single trait

Stabilizing- favoring

Divergent- polar opposites (not the books/movies) (yeah I know there is at least one person out there who is going to think of the movie every time you see the word "Divergent", I feel you bro.) 

Depending what teacher you have, they may give a different definition of evolution. If you have a college teacher like I do, they may be like "EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS A LIE!" as many college teachers tend to do. Make sure you get their definition of evolution to make sure you don't write down the "wrong" definition.
