Penitence (n):
The action of feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong; repentance.

Yet again, I gaze up at the sky,
My mind wrapped up with thoughts,
Uncountable like the stars.

Unsaid words lapping the tip of my tongue,
Wanting to be spilled,
Yearning to be suspended in the cold, unwelcoming air.

Contrary to the mind,
My heart wants to keep the words, the apologies locked in,
For it knows how much condign the agony is.

Even my tears scorn me,
Refusing to flow,
Replacing themselves by the rivulets of crimson liquid oozing from my orbs.

Why do my lungs fail me at times?
And why can't passersby see my burning heart?
Why is a wisp of smoke all they notice?

Despite the torment,
Why does content reside in my heart?
And mutilate it beyond repair?

A chilly gust of wind sweeps past me,
Shuddering my entire being;
An indication of nature's disgust directed at me.

Accompanying the breeze is a  whisper so aloof,
'When helpless and tiny were thou,
People as precious as gems helped you row,
Through the sea of life'

'Then as life would have it,
When you were skilled in rowing,
You left behind those gems,
Not sparing a look at them, drowning'

Oh unfortunate soul,

'In a cave so dark, you were blessed with a light,
In a battle so arduous, you were taught how to fight'

Oh unfortunate soul,

'When your knees buckled, you were taught to stand up and soar heights,
But when you were capable enough to fight,
You left them all alone at the battle site'

Oh unfortunate soul,

'Now, what do you have to say?
Shouldn't you pay?'

Slouched shoulders, teary eyes,
I intake a deep breath, my chapped lips part,
'Inept was I; not too wise,
And indeed I deserve a bleeding heart'

Author's note:
Respect your gems. Everybody leaves. So will they and you shall regret.
