We sat in the embrace until Asher's phone rang. "Hello." He answered before putting it on speaker he mouthed 'my mom'.
"Asher?! Where are you guys?! You know you're grounded!" Mrs. Jacobs said worriedly.
"Woah, relax Mom. We're just at the park across the street. Safiya's right next to me." At this I jumped in.
"Hello Mrs. Jacobs." I said, trying to make my voice sound as cheerful as I could. It was hard considering what had just happened. My voice still came out a bit hoarse.
"Safiya? Are you okay? You sound sick."
"Ya, I'm fine." I lied. "Just allergies." I don't even have allergies and Asher knew that because of our game of twenty questions. He started quietly laughing to which he earned a hard slap.
"Hey!" He whisper-yelled childishly. I rolled my eyes at him and gave him a sarcastic smile.
"Okay then, come home as soon as you can." Asher's mom told us.
"Bye, Mom." Asher replied before hanging up. After that we went to go get Brandon. He was sitting there using the juice that came out of the small cherry tree to draw on the ledge just like all of the little kids were doing. I was so interested in watching Brandon, that I didn't realize Asher walking up to me with a cherry.
"Go draw something." He said to me softly. I happily accepted the cherry without hesitation. I wrote my name in pretty letters. After I was done, I walked over to Ash, who had written both of our names in beautiful calligraphy.
"Oh my god, Ash..... This is beautiful." I said, completely mesmerized.
"Thanks." He replied bashfully, a blush creeping upon his neck. I smiled at the thought of Asher Jacobs being a secret nerd. "We should probably be heading home." He said to both me and Brandon.
"Aww." Brandon complained, but he still said bye to his friends and started walking.
"Okay then." Asher said with a smile. I looked up at him to see him playing with the locket that was still not explained clearly enough.
"Wait, so can you explain the lockets a little more?"
He gave me a smile before biting his lower lip. "As you know the lockets have been passed down through the generations." He started. "Whenever a baby boy is born, both of these lockets are given to him. The moon is for him to keep. The sun however," he said now taking ahold of the locket around my neck, "Is to give to the person who he just met and couldn't picture life without anymore. Even though it is typically the girl he wants to marry, it could be given to just a person who you want in your life." He finished.
"So basically it's an heirloom."
"Mhm."
"Why would you want to give it to me?"
"Because I always see you in class all by yourself. I had a hunch that I was going to need this today. Plus, after you opened up to me so freely, I felt as if I could, too." he said, slowing down his pace, as we could see the houses now.
"So, I'm your best friend?" I couldn't do that. I suffered from anxiety and depression and seeing as he is the most popular boy in the school...
"Essentially, yes." He answered. He turned to look at me and frowned when he saw my face. "Saf, what's wrong?"
"Ash, I suffer from depression and anxiety. How am I supposed to be your best friend with all of those people in school judging me?" Asher looked confused so I continued. "I hate attention, and with you being the team's quarterback and the most popular guy in the school, I would be getting way to much attention that I wouldn't want. And what would people think of you, being best friends with a nerd?" I ranted, taking off the beautiful locket and handing it to Ash.
"Safiya, I know you're scared but we can make it work." He said effortlessly while putting the locket back around my neck. "How about this? We pretend not to be best friends in school, and if anything happens with rumors or anything, we could play the neighbors card or the parents card." I liked his logic, plus how long was this going to last, he is Asher Jacobs after all.
"I like that, a lot." I said smiling up at him to see that he was smiling down on me. All of a sudden he pulled me into a tight hug.
"Hey! A group hug without me?!" Brandon screeched while coming over to get in on the hug. We all started laughing and soon after tore apart. I was surprised to see that we were almost at Asher's house. I hid the necklace, knowing that it was a big deal in his family. I figured it would be Asher's right to tell them.
"We're home!" Asher yelled.
"I'm in the kitchen!" Michelle yelled back. We made our way back to the beautiful kitchen.
"Mommy!" Brandon yelled, running into her embrace.
"Brandon!" She yelled back. I smiled at the sight. "Did you have fun?"
"Yeah! Safiya's the best Mommy. Can she babysit again?"
"Of course, but only if she wants too." At this, three pairs of crystal grey eyes flew to me.
"I would love to." I said while Brandon cheered.
"Thank you so much. Oh I almost forgot, your mom wants you home soon. Here you go." She said, handing me $50.
"Michelle, this is too much!" I said, I was only supposed to get $25. Michelle just winked at me.
"They can be a handful sometimes. Thank you." She said again.
"You're welcome." I said smiling.
"Ash, why don't you walk her out." He nodded while gesturing me the way to the door.
"Here's my number," he said, writing it on my hand with a pen. "Call or text me whenever." he said, giving me a quick hug. He then open the door smiling at me one last time before he closed the door.
I smiled, who knew Asher Jacobs as a best friend, could be the one thing that helped me after my brother. I continued smiling and walked the short walk to my house.
