"Mom?" Rod said in a soft voice. Vivian took her gaze away from the vibrant color of the falling leaves. "Yeah, honey?"
Rod looked at her with a serious expression. "Do you think" He swallowed hard "that dad's in heaven now?" Adrian and Vivian both looked at him surprised, but their expression soon turned somber. "Of course! He was a great man. And a great father." Vivian said with enthusiasm. They all smiled. Adrian wiped tears from her eyes. "Yeah, he was." Her voice became a whisper "I-I'm gonna miss him."
"Are we gonna have a furneral? I mean...if we ever get home?" Rodney said.
"Yes. And we will. We will get home. I'll make sure of that." Vivian brought them close and hugged them. They stood like that for a few moments before continuing. The group walked for an hour, telling each other their favorite memories of Daniel. One time where he once accidentally set his apron on fire while grilling, so he jumped into the pool fully clothed. Another where he forgot to close the livingroom window on Christmas eve, and when they all woke up, the room was covered in snow.Eventually they got tired of walking and stopped to take a break. "Now I'm really hungry. Adrian do you have anything in your bag?" Rodney said. Adrian's face lit up. "Oh! I do." She quickly dug her hands into the bag and searched around. She pulled out a Protein bar. "That's it?" Rod said, looking defeated. Vivian put her hand out and Adrian gave her the bar. "It has 18 grams of protein, that's six for each of us." Vivian opened the wrapper and split the bar into thirds. Rod grabbed his and ate it in one bite, while the other two nibbled away at theirs. Rodney and Adrian laid their heads on Vivian's shoulder. Rodney fell asleep in an instant. "You can take a short nap if you want, darling." Vivian said, patting Adrian's leg. She rolled them both gently onto the ground next to each other. She smiled and Adrian closed her eyes. Vivian stood up and began searching for a signal again.
Adrian and Rodney slept for a few minutes before they were shook awake. "Guys, wake up. I think I saw someone!" Vivian said gleefully. The kids sat up, instantly alert. "Where are they? Did they see us?" Rodney said. They got up and dusted the dirt and leaves from their clothes.
"No, they were walking away from us. Plus you guys were laying down and I happened to be behind a tree anyway. If we hurry we can probably catch up to them. Maybe find a usuable phone." Vivian started to jog in the direction of the stranger. She looked back and signaled the kids to follow suit. They ran for a few minutes before a cabin in the distance came into veiw. "Mom! Look." Rodney said, pointing at the building. "I see it. Okay, hide behind the trees here. I'm gonna go to the house and ask for help. If it's okay I'll call you. If I don't come out after awhile..get away." Vivian said with a stern face. Adrian and Rodney both shared a look of worry. "But mom...I don't want to get left out here alone. It will get dark soon." Adrian pleaded. "It will be okay. I'll be careful. Plus, I trust you guys." with that, vivian walked off to the house.Vivian approached the door and knocked. There was a pause, then it opened only but a crack. The chain lock kept the door from opening any further. "Yeah?" said a tired voice. A face of an older man appeared from behind the door. Vivian waved and a gave her friendliest smile. "Hello. Um, I was wondering if you had a working phone. Me, my husband, and...uh...a couple of friends were camping out here. One of them hurt themselves, and we can't get them help because our car ran out of gas. Could I use your phone to call for a lift?" The man eyed her for a moment then nodded. He closed the door and unlocked the chain. He opened it again and motioned her inside.
"Rod. Vivian just went inside. Start counting to five minutes. If she doesn't come out, we'll go to a better hiding spot." Adrian ordered. They were hiding on their stomachs near the base of a tree and some bushes, peeking through a clearing.
Vivian scoped out the room and noticed it was very neat. A wooden table and chairs sat across from a small outdated kitchen. To the side of the table, was a worn couch, an end table, and an unused fireplace leading towards a small hallway. "Your house looks cozy." Vivian said, trying to make casual conversation. The man raised an eyebrow. "Right." He walked over to the fridge and pulled out a pitcher. He poured a red liquid into two glasses he got from a cupboard. "Want something to drink? Got some fruit punch." He offered a cup. "Oh, thank you, but I'd much prefer water." Vivian smiled and pointed to the faucet. The man dumped the punch back into the pitcher then placed it in the fridge. He filled the cup from the faucet and handed it to her. Vivian accepted the drink, took a small sip, then set it on the table. "My name's Vivian, by the way." she smiled again. "Luke." He said, taking a drink from his glass. "Well, nice to meet you Luke" Vivian gave a weak laugh "do you think I could I use your phone now?" Luke glupped down the rest of his drink.
"Well, I don't have a phone exactly. Just a walkie Talkie" Luke moved towards the the couch "My friend has the other one. He's the one who goes into town and gets supplies." Luke picks up a walkie talkie, then heads to the door. "It only works outside." He said then walked out. Vivian followed him.Luke pulled the antenna out then pushed a button. The device beeped. There was nothing but static for a few seconds. "Yeah?" A voice said through the walkie talkie. Beep. "I got a group of campers who say they need a ride to the hostpital. Someone got hurt and they ran out of gas." Luke said. Vivian nodded her head approvingly. Beep. "Alright." He sighs "I'm almost there." Luke pushes the antenna back down and puts it in his pocket. "Well, go round up your group. I'll wait inside for you." He smiled and went back in the cabin.
