Present
28th August, 2016

I entered the dining room with a scowl. Just my usual morning face.

"Good morning to you too" Aunt Nina chirped from the head of the table, obviously pretending whatever happened yesterday hadn't happened. That was our routine. I mess up and she covers it, acting like everything's fine in the world

But in a way I was thankful for it

"Morning" I grumbled back, settling in a chair. Aurora upon seeing me, squealed and waved her arms, excitedly, dropping the piece of apple she had been nibbling on

She pointed towards the kitchen and started telling me something in her sloppy language. The only words I could make out were 'eina' 'appl' referring to Aunt Nina and apple. Suddenly she picked up her abandoned apple and held it towards me from across the table

I scrunched my face, faking disgust while I shook my head, earning another squeal

"Yummm" She giggled,

The way she could flip my mood just with her presence..It was terrifying

Terrified. I was.

I poured milk into the bowl in front of me which already contained cornflakes. A woman probably in her mid twenties walked in with a dallah from which she poured the steaming qawah into Aunt Nina's cup, whose fingers were flying over her phone

She proceeded to fill my cup too, but I halted her, requesting for date milkshake instead

She nodded and smiled politely.

I didn't smile back

"I have a very important meeting today so I'll be heading to the office. Did you know Hues and Vibes are collaborating for the winter collection? I'm surprised Nick Craig hasn't called off the proposal, considering that I've been postponing this meeting for about a month now." She sighed, sipping her qawah

I stayed silent, although I was happy for her. That's the thing I sucked at expressing. So most of the time I didn't respond and others thought I'm just another heartless bitch. Maybe I was

"So, Aurora is yours for the day" Aunt Nina said, sarcastically, pinching Aurora's cheeks and throwing me a wink

What? No! No.

I haven't held her in my arms in the past four months, how can she expect me to spend a whole freaking day with her

Four months. Four months since Sapphire left us. Left me. Forever.

Aunty knew I had been keeping my distance from Aurora purposefully. She even agreed it was best if I stayed away, yet I didn't understand why she persisted me to spend time with her.

For the last four months Aunt Nina has been taking care of Aurora, because I was too ashamed to face her.

Although Aunty tells me it wasn't my fault but I know I'm the one to blame. If only I had opened the door that day, everything would've been different by now
