Chapter 2:

Melissa’s gun stayed poised on the person before her.

He held up his hands as a sign of surrender, and hesitantly took a step towards her. Melissa matched his step, and backed up a few feet. In any crisis there were always people waiting to take advantage of the situation. Melissa knew this and was wary of him. He could be a bandit or a robber here to loot stores and houses.

She kept her gun trained on his face as she quickly assessed him. He stood probably around 6 feet, and appeared to be pretty built. I may not be able to fight him, but I can outrun him, she thought.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” snapped out of her thoughts she pulled her gaze back towards the man. He took another hesitant step forward.

“I’m Oliver,” he stepped towards her again, now only a few feet in front of her.

“Melissa,” she murmured, still trying to figure out how she could escape.

As he went to step forward again, she bolted, sprinting straight past the blonde haired guy and back towards her house.

Within a few seconds she heard the sound of crunching gravel from behind her, he was gaining on her, and fast.

As she tried to push herself even farther, she felt a calloused hand grab her elbow. The stranger pulled her to a stop. He grabbed onto her other elbow and pulled her back towards his chests.

She struggled to get out of his iron grip, but it was no use. Melissa gave a small whimper, like an animal that was cornered.

“Melissa...” he started still winded from the run, “you run fast as hell.”

She couldn’t stop a slight smile from appearing on her lips, but it quickly fell as she realized she was still in danger.

“Let me go!” She attempted to elbow him but to her surprise he pushed her forward gently, out of his grasp. She debated running, but was stopped when she heard the sound of his voice.

“Look, I’m sorry for grabbing you, I really am. But you’re the first person I’ve come across and I really need your help,” he awkwardly brushed his hand through his hair, his expression remorseful.

Melissa eyed him suspiciously, “Well, I can’t really do much to help you out. You might want to find someone else.”

She paused for a moment, but when he said nothing she turned to go.

The man let out an exasperated sound. “Melissa, please.”

The desperation in his voice triggered something within her and she stopped.

“I have no one else.”

Melissa spun around, something just clicking in her mind, “Alright.”

He glanced up at her elated by the response, “Really?”

“Yeah,” she bit her lip, “But don’t make me regret trusting you.”

As they continued down the road, neither one spoke.

“So, umm... Oliver where are you from? And I mean, Noble doesn’t really have much to offer people, so why come here?”

“Well it’s a long story,” he sighed, looking off into the distance.
