I let out a triumphant "Yes!" when I finally pulled they key out of my ignition and slumped into my seat. It was astounding how crowded this campus was in September. It had taken me about 45 minutes to get from the gates to the parking area.
When I got out of the car, I paused for a moment, my mouth gaping in awe. I was absolutely stunned by the beauty of the school. The never-ending driveways were lined with bountiful, sky-high trees. In every direction I looked were wide expanses of greenery. Students were leisurely strolling the grounds; chatting with new-found friends, catching up with old high school companions. It only took one glance at the school's colossal, red-brick buildings to guess what kind of kids went here. I let out a long sigh of longing. If only I had the kind of life in which I could attend to a school like this.
I headed to the back of my car, meanwhile still scoping my surroundings. I couldn't get over the fact that I'd actually be going here, even if it was all pretend. With much struggle, I hauled my suitcase out of the trunk. I had begged Mia to pack just the bare essentials, but let's just say she'd gone overboard.
I peered around the campus, trying to distinguish the main building where I was supposed to get my dorm information. I decided to just follow the crowd and go in the direction the majority of people were going. I uncomfortably pulled my floral dress down a bit and looked at my toes as I walked, using my chestnut hair as a curtain to hide my face from everyone.
I tried my best not to attract any attention toward myself. "Just keep walking," I told myself, "one foot in front of the other." I unsuccessfully tried to hide my anxiety for this new college. I generally didn't fit in very well, and trying to be someone else didn't help my case.
I was so lost in my own world that I didn't perceive the foot in my path until my worn out sandals came in contact with it, and I was sent flying forward. An umph escaped the lips of the unsuspecting casualty of my clumsiness as I crashed into them, knocking them onto the ground. I heard several gasps around me and suddenly all eyes were on me. As I slowly brought my head up, I was met with a pair of piercing, yet familiar icy blue eyes.
I scoured my brain trying to match the name with the face, until suddenly it hit me! This was John Carter! When I looked down a bit to see more of him, I realized the compromising position we were in. I was straddling him, my head lying on his chest and his hands resting on my arse. Blood rushed to my cheeks as I quickly recovered from the embarrassing position we were in, hastily running my fingers through my now tangled hair. John, however, took his time getting off the ground and gave me a satisfied smirk.
"Uh... hi?" I awkwardly mustered. I mentally slapped myself for my inability to communicate with strangers.
Fortunately, he didn't embarrass me any further. He simply lets out a soft chuckle. "What's your name?" he asks, with genuine curiosity written all over his face.
"I'm Sca- Hazel! Hazel Morgan," I shuffled around a bit, praying to the Lord Jesus he hadn't noticed my blunder.
"Hazel...," he pondered for a bit, "that's a pretty name. It matches your eyes." He gave me a little wink. I quirked my eyebrows a little. Was he hitting on me?
"For the record, my name is John Carter. And I'll definitely be seeing around, Hazel Morgan," he left with a smirk and a small wave. All I did was stand there like an idiotic mute and stare at him walking away.
As soon as he was out of sight, I shook myself out of my reverie. I hadn't even been here for five minutes, and I'd already managed to make a fool out of myself and get hit on my one of my suspects.
