"Midori, it's time to get up," my nanny said. I was severely scared of morning. What would my parents say? What would they do? Getting dressed with shaky hands, I repeated whispering, "Just stay calm, Midori. It'll be alright, Midori." "You talking to yourself again? Boy, you are one sad child." I ignored Noriko like I ignored everyone.
I walked into the kitchen. Okasama (mother) sipped some coffee and Otasan (father) focused on his newspaper. The maid set breakfast on the table. "Good morning, Otasan!" I bowed to him."Good morning, Okasama!" I bowed to her. "Morning," they both said, Okasama nodded her head at me, while Otasan still concentrated on the newspaper. I sat with them and ate a little. "Midori?" "Yes, Okasama?"
"Today you will be having your violin lessons with Mr.Gomi." "O-okay!" I said, a little nervous. They didn't say another word until we were all done with breakfast.
"Work hard with Mr. Gomi, Midori," Okasama told me. Then her tone became a stern one as she said, "And do not disappoint me again." I nodded vigorously and fearfully said, "I will try my best! I will not dishonor you again!" She smirked a little and nodded, then ruffled my hair and left. Otasan finished putting what he needed into his briefcase and left without a word...
Since it was Sunday, I was to practice all day. I got my violin case with my violin inside and went to the door. Noriko opened the door and we waited outside together. Shortly Abelard arrived in his limousine. I got in while Noriko told me she'd be back before I was home. Strangely whenever she told me this, it always reassured me.
"Dus yah parentz 'ate you, yet?" he asked with a chuckle. "They can't hate me," I scoffed. "Ooooh! Some vun es feisty tuday!" I ignored him again. Standing up for myself was useless. I would always lose whether I tried or not. "I voud've lawved tu owf zeen ya parentz' vace ven they 'eard ya play yezderday! Muzt've bean prizeless!" I twiddled my thumbs to try and focus on something to distract myself from his cruel words, but to no avail.
Finally he stated, "We are 'ere." I got out of the car and headed into the apartment complex. Though this man appeared poor, he was extremely rich from his art and skill in music. I climbed the stairs, trying my hardest not to drag my violin case against the stairs. My parents would severely scold me if they found a scratch on it.
I knocked on the door marked 206, and soon Mr. Gomi opened the door. I bowed to him. "Good morning, Mr. Gomi!" He nodded and ushered me in. We headed to his tiny living room we always practiced in. "Your okasama called me up and told me about how your debut went. I've decided we will try a more calm song for you to practice for your next performance. A song with adagio should be a better fit for someone your age." An adagio I learned a long time ago was a tempo having slow movement that causes it's listeners to become calm and relaxed. A piece with adagio can be hard, because trying to sound soothing can be difficult with an instrument such as a violin. "You accept the challenge?"
I didn't exactly have a choice. But if I did chose to quit learning violin, my parents would never forgive me. Everyone would dislike me more than they already did, and life would be even more unpleasant than it already was. "Yes. I'm ready to learn an adagio, Mr. Gomi."
