Marissa's a real doll, but she's got shitty timing. What a cockblocker, and she doesn't even know it. I was on the verge of solving a piece of Maddy's puzzle.
My phone chimes for the hundredth time since I ignored Marissa's call at the park.
Great.
I step out of the cab. At midday the late autumn humidity is at its worst, attacking me and curling its moist fingers around my dark waves. When I enter the downstairs lobby of the Club, security doesn't even acknowledge me anymore. He faces forward with a blank expression.
Once I enter the members' floor, I walk down the long corridor towards my room at the end. Silence permeates the hallway. No moans muffled by closed doors, and no giggles from trainers in passing.
It's late—everyone can't be at lunch.
I slip my room key from my wallet, my thoughts lingering on Maddy. I hadn't gotten any closer to telling her about Holden's interests in her from when I found out yesterday. Before I can insert the card into the slot, a small hand reaches out and stops me.
"Come with me now, ask questions later," Marissa whispers.
"But I just got here—"
"Shhhh." Her finger goes to her pink glossed lips to shush me, and her opposite arm loops around mine before she drags me away. "Didn't I just tell you—"
"Yeah, to come back here—I read all your psycho texts. Now you're taking me away."
The lock from inside my apartment door clicks, and Marissa's eyes widen. She shoves at me to move like a mouse trying to push a bull.
I chuckle because her struggle is so real, strands of red hair has fallen loose from her ponytail. "Seriously, A.J., now is not the time to be stubborn," Marissa angry whispers at me. "Would you get in there?"
"The closet?"
"Hurry up before they see you." Marissa flings open the door and pulls me into a tiny room with shelves on all three walls lined with linens and cleaning supplies. Then she pulls the door closed and we're swathed in darkness.
