"Is that why you didn't want to play with me before?"
"Yeah..." Karkat said with his head down.
"Don't you like me?" Terezi asked as she starting poking him in the arm.
"No I do I-I mean well your fun to play with" he stuttered not sure what to say. The way she had worded made it confusing. Did she mean didn't like her as in like a friend or like like her the way some of the older kids did? "I mean your a nice friend"
"Aw but if like like each other wouldn't that stop them" she questioned. "Maybe they'd even get...jealous?" She nudged him with her arm.
"Why are you nudging me?"
"It's what the big kids do"
"When are you suppose to stop?" He asked as he fumbled around trying to open his lunch box. Every time she nudged him the box would slip out of his hands and clunk onto the table.
"I don't know" Terezi stopped as she figured 30 times was enough to get the point across. "Race you to opening the lunch box"
"Nooooo" Karkat moaned. Unlike Terezi's, one zip lunch box, Karkat's was multilayered because his brother insisted that he could include at least one food item from each group. First you'd have to flip two devices outside to open the lid then take out the smaller containers inside revealing sandwiches in neatly wrapped tin foil.
"Oh no you won!" Terezi spoke with a defeated tone in her voice.
"What?" He replied in disbelief. He looked beside him and indeed Terezi had only managed to move the zip half way.
"My zip got caught" she smiled unzipping it effortlessly. In truth she had let him win because she felt bad he always lost and maybe something else but that was normal right?
"Oh how did you fi-Hey!" He whipped his head to the left as he felt his lunch box being torn away from him. "Give it..." His voice died down as he realised who it was. His eyes shone in intense anger but he nervously glanced away from them. One of the older years had decided to take his lunch. The same bully who taunted him for playing with a girl saying how he was a girl himself and a loner.
"Whatcha got in the box twerp"
"Give me my lunch box you stupid bully" The chair screeched harshly against the floor as Karkat stood to snatch it back.
"Aw is someone upset?" They waved around the precious lunchbox spilling its contents everywhere.
"LEAVE HIM ALONE!" Yelled Terezi. The entire lunch room went silent. Until now the other children had been purposely ignoring the series of events in fear of losing their lunch. Everyone stared as even the bully was for a second mystified that someone was yelling at them.
"YEAH LEAVE HIM ALONE!" Nepeta joined in as she was watching from another table.
Both chairs screeched in protest as the girls ran up to them. The bully took a step back slightly frightened. This was an unexpected turn of events.
"Go away! Stop bulling our friend!" Terezi said marching up to him. Even if they did tower over her she wouldn't let anyone pick on her friend anymore.
"We'll tell the teacher if you don't" Nepeta threatened standing right next to her best friend. They seemed to have backed him to the door.
"I-I'm gonna tell my mom!" The bully he turned and slammed the door open. Their glares pieced into his back as he pelted for his life back into the corridor. The room was silent. No one really knew how to act like time itself had stopped.
