"Mom! Dad! I made the team!" I exclaim as soon as I walk through the door. My mom smiles.
"Good job!" She congratulates me. My dad says the same.
"We have something to tell you," my dad says. I nod and let them continue.
"So I guess someone professional viewed your cover videos. He asked if you would want to perform at the new cafè for opening night. He said it will bring lots of attention to it," mom says. Unintentionally, my jaw drops.
"They want me to perform there?" I ask. She nods.
"When is it?" I ask, getting excited.
"Tonight, if-"
"Yes!" I say. She laughs.
"Okay then! How about you go pick out some clothes and I'll do your hair," she suggests.
"Okay! Thank you so much mom and dad!" I say, giving both of them a hug.
I run into my room and start going through my drawers. I have to remember that I can't swear sweatpants and a t-shirt or anything, but I have to remember that I'm only 12, not 16.
I finally decide on some ripped jeans, white lace t-shirt, and some uggs (in media not including jewelry). I walk down the stairs and into the kitchen where mom is making supper.
"That looks cute," she compliments me. I smile and look down at my outfit.
"Thank you."
"So after I finish the chicken, I'll do your hair, and then you can come up with some songs you want to preform tonight. It starts at 8:30, but he wants you there by 8:00," she says. I nod.
"How about you and your dad discuss some songs you could do?" She suggests. I nod my head and run into the living room. I sit next to dad.
"What's up sweetie?" He asks.
"Can you help me come up with some songs that I could preform tonight?" I ask. He nods his head and turns off the tv. (Btw I'm going to do the songs me have now because I obviously don't know any of the songs in the future.)
"You could start off with more of a pop and upbeat song," he suggests.
"I could do Grenade by Bruno Mars" I say. He nods. We brainstorm some more songs before we eat supper. Mom puts my hair into a high pony with a French braid leading up the side of my head and soon we head out the door.
When we get to the new cafè, I see a man who obviously knows who I am because he waves and comes up to my parents and I.
"Hi! You must be Emily. I'm Bart," he says, holding out his hand. I shake it.
"So I can just talk to your parents for a while and you can just go set up and figure out some stuff," he tells me. I nod and walk over to the mini stage. There is a guitar and a keyboard there. I sit down at the keyboard and plug it in. I turn it on and press a note to see if it works. Yup. I set up my sheets of music and start slightly playing them while singing quietly to myself.
Soon the cafè is full of people, and some people from school are actually here which will make it more embarrassing if I mess up. Lots of them give me dirty looks, some give me a confused look, some give me thumbs up, and some just look at me awkwardly and walks to talk to some people.
"You performing tonight?" I hear someone ask. I look down and see an unfamiliar guy who looks about my age.
"Uh, yeah," I say unsurely.
"Cool. Do you mind if I look at some of the music?" He asks. I shrug. He seems pretty genuine. It wouldn't hurt for him to see my set list.
"Suit yourself," I say, giving him a hand to get up on the stage. I stand up and see that he is just barely taller then me.
"Grenade and Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars, Heathens by Twenty One Pilots, Starving by Hailee Steinfeld, Stitches by Shawn Mendes, Don't Let Me Down by the Chainsmokers, Heartbreak Girl by 5SOS, The A Team by Ed Sheeran, and the song Air, but I notice that it's crossed out," he says, reading each song and artist off of the paper I handed to him.
"It's a duet. It's one of my favourite songs, but it's weird singing it by yourself," I tell him.
"I know it. By Shawn Mendes and Astrid," he says.
"Really? Would you mind doing the duet with me?" I ask. He nods.
"Sure," he agrees.
"I'm Toby," he says. Strange how I'm going to do a duet with him when I just learned is name only now.
"Emily," I respond. Suddenly, the room gets a bit quieter when Bart speaks into the mic, making me jump from surprise.
"Alright, so we have a special guest for our grand opening tonight. Here she is live, Emily Dimmer-Sartorius!" He says. Everyone cheers.
"Good luck," Toby whispers before walking off the stage. I awkwardly smile at him. I go up to the mic and set it by the keyboard.
"Hi everyone! I hope you're having a wonderful evening. I'll be playing a few songs for you all tonight. The first song I'll be performing is Grenade by Bruno Mars. Hope you enjoy."

"Okay, so for the last song of the night is called Air by Shawn Mendes. Since I don't wanna be a loner singing this duet, I'm going to bring a new friend of mine up here to sing with me. So Toby, come on up," I say into the mic. He comes out from the crowd and walks up on stage. He sits next to me and waves. We both start playing the keyboard, different melodies but it still sounds really good. It's funny how two people can make such a connection with the power of music.
Never thought that we would end up here
Should have known it from the start
I know you mean it when you say you love me
But we're trying way to hardToby sings this into the microphone. It catches off guard at first, knowing that he probably didn't warm up his voice before this and yet still sounds incredible.
Used to think that we would last forever
How could I have been so wrong?
Never thought I'd be the one to say this
What if our time has come and gone?I sing. Toby slightly smiles at me.
You, you don't mean no harm
But you're stringing me along and I don't have the time to spare
And I, I'm trying hard to breath
But you're suffocating me
This time I'm coming out for airWe sing in sync. Our voices somehow make a melodic harmony which I think sounds beautiful together.
Toby's a nice friend. I have a feeling he's not in my classes because I probably would have seen him. I hope I can get to know him more. He seems like a nice guy with a nice voice.
Hope you liked it! It's a bit more interesting then my last couple updates.
Love you all!
