Mallory sat in the forest long after Isla ran away. She could hear the leaves rustle and birds chirping like nothing was wrong. She could hear her own stupid, stupid words echo through her head long after Isla's footsteps faded away.
She looked over at the tree that Isla had leaned on when they spent the short nights together.
She stood up, brushed the dirt off her skirt, and started to walk back home. The sun was rising, and she would be expected home soon. It didn't matter how long she sat there wondering if Isla would ever come back. It was no use. There was nothing she could do now. And so she walked back along Isla's escape path to her home with the light of the rising sun.
