Yes I, TheWonderfulE, am an actual swimmer. I've been swimming since before Free came out, and let me tell ya, swimming is not that glamorous. Granted, I love the sport (I actually got first place for my 100m backstroke race at my last meet) and love Free, but swimming is torturous. I'm just warning all of you non-swimmers who want to start swimming because of this show to be prepared. Your shoulders will hurt like nothing you have ever felt before, and you will not be able to walk up stairs--unless you have a nice coach whose goal is not to kill you.
Club teams suck, and are kind of clique-y. But if you find a group of friends you'll be fine. Granted, I no longer swim for club, but rather only for my school. So all of my experiences will be related to my school's swim team.
The one thing that Free does get right is the team bonding. Girls whom I never thought I would become friends with have become like my second family. Swimming is a team sport, and no swimmer is left behind. Everyone has to give it their all, or else it will mean nothing. We get up at the ungodly hour of 5:45 am and swim together, then come back to the pool as soon as school is over. We eat breakfast and dinner together, and pretty much live together.
Although, the swimming aspects of the show are not quite on par with the real thing. The backstroke Makoto does lacks a steady rhythm and his knees bend too far in the water. AND THE BUTTERFLY REI AND RIN SWIM LOOKS SO PAINFUL OH MY GOLLY GOSH!! YOU DON'T HIT THE WATER THAT HARD YOU'LL BARELY MOVE AHHHHH!! (I KNOW I USED TO SWIM BUTTERFLY LIKE THEM.) The freestyle is eh, it's not as exciting as it seems on the show. Freestyle is my least favorite stroke because it's really boring to swim to be honest. They do like no pull in the show, but I don't blame them because pull is hell. Also I have never seen a vision whilst swimming--unless you count that one time I fell asleep in the pool...
But that's just my swim experiences. If y'all want to try out swimming go ahead, it's fun. But none of the guys act like they Free boys do. But they all wear those super tight swim suits. :^))) If you're on swim team you should tell me your experiences because there's not a lot of other swimmers out there.
