Do you ever wonder why you should not stare directly at the Sun?

Hopefully, someone told you it was because it is painful and will damage your eyes.

Well, a long time ago, long before time ever mattered, the entire night sky was as bright and piercing as that single spot of Sun. And the day was dark and empty, for no light could penetrate the curtain of the sky.

Not the stars, for their light was too small. Not Maiyla, for her skin was made of beautiful stone and gave off no light. And not Safara, for although she was made of fire and light, and could pierce through the curtain of the sky, she was not there to penetrate the day's darkness.

For she danced with Maiyla through the night and together they slept through the day, waiting for the next night to begin and their dance to begin again.

Every night, Safara would hold Maiyla close and they would dance across the sky. Being held so close, Maiyla's stone reflected the light of Safara's fire and it shone so bright, they were all you could see! The Sun and its doppelgänger, the moon made bright.

The only one who could watch their dance was Kiandra, for when one is as vast and deep as the sea, one can see all, no matter how bright and no matter how dark.

And as so often happens with those who watch beautiful dancing, Kiandra wished to dance as well but she had no dancing gown and no means to gather the necessary materials to make one.

So, one night, just as night was ending and before Safara and Maiyla retired to their daily rest, Kiandra called up to them.

"I wish to dance as well," she pleaded. "In my depths are magnificent weavers, beautiful pearls and stones, and all that is needed for the most magnificent dancing gowns!"

If they were willing to gather the materials for her, she would gladly make dancing gowns for the two of them along with her own. The two gladly accepted Kiandra's offer.

But they had danced through the night and Maiyla was not made of fire and light as Safara was and had grown too tired to make the long journey to the earth. So Safara bid Maiyla goodnight and as Maiyla fell into the day's sleep, Safara travelled to the Earth and went to Kiandra to begin gathering for the dancing gowns.

First, Safara went to the great Octopus who slept among her many looms. Feeling the warmth of Safara's fire, she awoke and without a word began to weave. Fabrics dark and light and transluscent. Fabric so soft and fine that you could see through ten layers of it.

Safara travelled the vastness of the ocean floor in search of discarded clams' pearls and shiny stones. As they walked, the fire of their skin burned the sand beneath their feet to glass. And of course they picked that up as well.
