Chapter 4

"Why are we here?" I asked quietly. We were at Wildwood, Linh and Tam's old home. My voice echoed around.

"I just want to explain some things." Linh took a deep breath. I raised my eyebrows. "Like what?" 

She blurted it all out. "I need you to help me. I like someone and-" She stopped abruptly, like she suddenly decided she didn't want to tell me... or she was going to spill some secrets.

"And?" I urged gently.

Linh sighed. "I need you to help me stage something that will get this person jealous."

"Okay, for you," I answered, grinning.

Linh squealed and light-leaped us back to Everglen. 

"Finally, we were worried." Fitz draped his arm around my shoulders. I ducked out of it and blushed. 

"Umm... Linh, you have an Imparter, right?" I asked meekly. She nodded and I rushed into the beam of light.

"Sophie!" Grady was trying to keep Verdi under control. "A little help here!" I closed my eyes and pictured calming thoughts, but my mind kept on racing to the most recent moments. "I can't right now!" I shouted back as I sprinted to the house.

He paused to nod at me once, and Verdi thrashed her head around. I arrived at my room, my heavy breath filling in the silence. I dropped down onto my bed and picked up the Imparter. "Call Linh Song," I commanded softly, holding the cold device in my hand as I shivered.

Linh picked up immediately. "Time to plan!" she squealed again. After an hour of long talk and debate, we came up with a plan: Linh would get a boy, which we hadn't decided upon yet, to kiss her and make mushy comments. Every time they did that, I would whisper to Dex how perfect they look and goad him into liking Linh.

It wasn't the best plan, but it had to work. But I didn't know then that it would save us from the Neverseen.
