CHAPTER FIFTEEN; Her
Scarlett woke in the darkness of her apartment to a prodding on her shoulder. The witch jolted up, her neck aching with a throbbing pain as she rose, and everything from last night came rushing back to her mind; the white oak stake, Esther, Elijah. She couldn't help but glance around the room for him despite knowing that he was gone.
Her eyes instead though fell upon two familiar figures in the darkly lit room. "Hayley? Marcel," she recognized the hybrid and vampire, but when she spoke, her voice came out cracked and shaky.
"Scarlett, what happened," Hayley asked, stepping around the small living room and eyeing the disrupted furniture and Elijah's blood staining the floor.
"Esther," Scarlett shook her head, "she took him, her and Finn."
"Damn," Hayley muttered in response.
"A werewolf is missing and others were slaughtered. We were hoping Elijah knew something about it," Marcel explained.
"I'm not sure if he does," she noted but continued to remark, "but I guess that wasn't the only thing to happen last night either."
"What do you mean," Marcel raised his eyebrow.
"I'll explain later, we need to find him soon. Last night..." she tried to explain but images of the previous night made her freeze. She didn't want to think about Elijah unconscious and under Esther's thumb nor herself when she didn't have the slightest clue of what it could mean. "It wasn't pretty," she finished.
They could see the prominent worry in her eyes, and it reflected in their own. With few other words, they left, slamming a cracked door behind them. And Scarlett didn't give it a second glance. The only thing Scarlett cared about was finding Elijah.
Stepping outside of her apartment, a trail of blood could be spotted along the pathway. It made her stomach churn in sickening waves when Hayley noted it was vampire blood and similar to the werewolf blood they found before they met her. Her heart wrenched at the thought as she remembered seeing Elijah with the stake in his chest.
"I'll call Klaus," Hayley uttered as Scarlett was left speechless. She didn't know what the man would say if they met; she did in fact try to kill him without remembrance hours ago.
"Marcel, what if we can't find him," the witch wondered as Hayley tapped his number into her phone.
"We will," he replied. "Esther doesn't want to kill her children; she only wants them back, just twisted in ways in attempt to take back what she did. But I think we all know that they were meant to be for a reason."
And she couldn't decide whether the thought settled or unnerved her.
"Uh, I'm a tad busy. What is it Hayley," Klaus on the other line could be distinctly heard with a slight pant in his voice.
"Something has happened to Elijah," Hayley spoke into the speaker as they continued to walk the litter streets from the werewolf attack. "He's vanished. Scarlett said Esther took him. There's blood everywhere," she continued, "werewolf and vampire. There's a trail; I need you to help us track it.
"Well as much as I might like to help you find my brother, I have more pressing matters at the moment, some that Scarlett might be concerned with as well," he replied back, a muffling of sorts echoing back through the speaker.
"What's more important than your own brother," she bit, her voice frustrated.
"My life? Davina had Mikael on a magical leash, and it broke. Now Mikael has the Tunde's blade, the White Oak stake, and Cami," he stated, making the hairs on Scarlett's neck rise as well as Marcel to his feet. "And I'm going to get her back. And then I'm going to end this. Either Mikael or I will ash by day's end, and if you do find my brother, tell him I could do with a hand."
