I wake up to a door slam. I panic and fall out of bed. I get up, still panicked, and go downstairs to see my mom crying on the couch, and my panic quickly turns into sadness.

"Mom, are you okay?" She jumped a bit and looked over at me with tears in her eyes. She didn't say anything and went back to crying.

They get into fights every time he comes over, and I can't do anything about it because they always fight after I go to bed or in the morning.

"Mom, I'm going go to the store and rent movies, get ice cream and candy. I'll be back soon. Love you." I say as I run upstairs to change out of pajamas. I grab a jacket that was on the floor and then put on my sneakers.

I head back downstairs with a positive thought.

"Take the keys," she tells me with a sniffle between her words.

"Be back soon," I yell to her as I am mostly out the front door.

I get in the car and start to drive when I hear my phone ring. I look off the road for a second to check who it is. It's Jess, fuck, I quickly answer it and put it on speaker.

"Hey cutie, what's up?"

"Nothing much sexy, just wanna know what time are you coming over?"

I look at the time, 1:30 p.m. "I'll probably be over around 2:30."

"Okay, I just wanted to know because Jason wants to come over and help us move the boxes. I know you don't like him much, it's extra help, but I still wanted to run it by you."

I sigh, "No, I don't mind. What time will Jason be there?"

"About 20 minutes."

"Damnit. I wanted to tell you something important."

"Oh, what is it?"

"I'm driving right now. Can we talk later?"

"Ya, okay." I heard a little bit of disappointment in her voice.

"Bye."

"Bye."

"Mom, I'm home!"

I heard her laugh, "I'm in the living room."

I place the bags I had in my hands on the counter and walk to the living room to see her and Gabe sitting on the couch.

"What the hell, mom."

"What? He apologized and brought me," She pauses and looks down at the bags on the coffee table, "vegetables," she looks back up at me and forces a smile.

"Gabe, leave," I say calmly, feeling as though my face would break if I gave any expression.

"What? No," His head snaps up at me from looking at his phone, showing that he wasn't paying any attention to the conversation.

"Fine, I will." I grab the keys and walk back out the front door, making it almost in the car.

My mom runs after me, "Max, please stay."

"I have to go help Jess anyway."

"Max." I heard the sadness in her voice.

"Mom, he made you cry. You try so hard to cover those bruises, but I still see them. Can't you see he is a bad person and shouldn't be with you or anyone? He'll treat them like he does you. You, me, and the rest of humanity would be way better off without him."

"Max, I'm so sorry."

Gabe walked out and spoke, "I'll help you and your friend move."

"That's a great idea, Babe." My mom opened the car door, and Gabe got in before I could even protest. I'm through with arguing anyway.

"Fine. Mom, don't forget the stuff on the counter and don't eat all the ice cream. Love you, be home soon."

"Love you too."

I drive off when Gabe opens his big mouth to speak, "Why did you get your mother ice cream?"

"Why did you get her vegetables?" I said in a cold-hearted tone

"Because she's fat and needs to lose weight."

That made me snap, and I quickly pull over and stop the car.

"Listen, you waste of fucking air and space, my mom is perfect the way she is. If you don't like that, you, an excuse for a man, can leave because we don't need you. No one needs you." I spit out the last words like acid, hoping he can feel the bitterness of them.

"No need to be so violent, kid. We're just having a conversation." He says and looks at me like he didn't expect me to get pissed.

Just as I was about to slap the shit out of him, my phone starts to ring. Jess once again saved me from snapping his neck. I breathe to calm down, answer it and begin to drive.

"Hi, Baby, " I say, calming myself.

"Hay sexy, so are you almost here?"

"Ya, I'm bringing someone, sadly," I say and look at him with a glare, still hoping he'll explode.

"Who?" She said in a confused tone. She knows I don't talk to anyone else, so this would be puzzling.

"Gabe," I spit out his name as if it was old gum I had been chewing too long.

"What, why him?!"

"I'll tell you when I get there. I'm about 20 minutes away,"

"Okay, see you soon. Byee."
