present
"ryeong," na jaemin pouted and leaned his chin onto his best friend's table, eyeing her as she was doing her homework. "ryeong. are you ignoring me, ryeong? fine. i'll tell jeno, you're so mean. i can't believe you, ryeong. ten years friendship, and you ditch me for some algebraic questions — "
"nana, please." ji haeryeong exhaled through her nose and placed her pen down, eyeing her best friend who was pouting while gazing at her homeworks. "you know i would choose you over algebra everyday, any day." even if it means i have to deal with you obsessing over haru, she added mentally.
"okay, good." his pout disappeared within seconds and he sat straight up, his arms folded neatly on haeryeong's table. a smile began to take over jaemin's face and haeryeong smiled back unconsciously, unaware of how contagious her best friend's smile really is. "i need to ask you something about haru."
haeryeong groaned and went back to completing her homeworks. "i know i'm being a bad friend, nana, but this is the fifth time today." she wrote her answer onto the blank space provided on the paper, unsure if it was the right answer or not. she turned back to jaemin and saw that he was looking through her pencil case. he seemed distracted and haeryeong went back to completing her worksheet, until he spoke up again.
"she's ignoring me, i don't know what to do." sadness was laced to his tone and she clenched her free fist, cursing haru internally for making jaemin upset. why didn't he told her about this earlier? "did you do anything to her before she started ignoring you?"
"no. i swear, i didn't. it was only valentine's day yesterday, remember? i brought flowers for her." haeryeong knocked her pen against her table once, twice. jaemin took off the cap of her silver glittery pen that he had found in her pencil case and wrote a name on her worksheet absently, no doubt writing down haru's name. his eyebrows were furrowed together and she let him write her name on her worksheet over and over again, while her eyes scanned the class quickly. they had free period on that day, so that explained why the class was so noisy. haeryeong spotted jeno sitting with some other friends, laughing until he caught her eyes.
she glanced at jaemin and back to him. jeno seemed to get the signal and quickly walked over to her seat, grabbing a random empty chair and placing it opposite haeryeong before plopping onto the seat. jaemin's eyes stayed on her worksheet (specifically, on haru's name) while jeno stared at him.
jeno punched jaemin lightly on his arm, "tell me everything."
"you know during recess earlier, yeah? so i was going to check on her, ask how she was doing and all. i wanted to ask if she liked the flowers i gave her yesterday or not. i approached her when i saw her walking with chaejin. they were smiling and laughing, that sight made me smile too - until she saw me. she frowned and i was about to ask what's wrong, but she walked pass me. just like that. as if she never saw me there at all." jaemin huffed and slammed the silver pen onto haeryeong's table, crossing his arms against his chest. haeryeong raised an eyebrow. that situation sounded oddly familiar, she had a feeling this happened to him before.
"remember a few years back, in eighth grade? you brought this girl a birthday present and she ignored you. what was her name again?" jeno had said what haeryeong had in mind. "rumi?"
"ugh," haeryeong rolled her eyes and let out a disgusted scoff, "don't bring her up again. she's irrelevant." and then quickly added, "no offense, nana." she patted his shoulder a few times, jaemin nodded his head to assure it was alright.
"so what do i do?" the end of jaemin's lips were curved downwards, and haeryeong felt her heart clenching at the sight of it. her gaze dropped onto her lap for a moment and she made an eye contact with jeno when she looked back up.
"i'll try to go and talk to her for you, yeah?" haeryeong patted jaemin's shoulders again, reassuringly. she shot jeno a look that said 'while i do this, do whatever you can to cheer him up' which he reacted to with a 'of course i will, who do you think i am?' look. jaemin's eyes lit up in happiness and so did the eyes of duo who were sitting with him. it was evident that jaemin was trying to resist the urge to hug both his best friends in class, so he held both their hands tightly instead.
"thank you, guys."
"anything for you."
"jae, are you trying to aim for me now that haru doesn't want you anymore?"
