Chapter Ten: Blood
The oh-so 'grand ball' of Cross Academy was in full swing on this night of a full moon night. When the Night and Day classes are permitted to mingle in fancy gowns and suits, all within one ballroom. It was a night of miracles, chance, love, confessions, and chances. Chances to pour one's heart out to the one they admire, the chance to relax, the chance to wear designer dresses, and of course, the chance to drain the life out of an unexpected mortal.
That would make for a grand entertainment for the evening, but unfortunately it was not on the schedule for the evening... well unless you're a VIP of the night. I swayed myself to the side, following my partner's lead, as the music strung from the friction caused between a bow and the strings of a violin echoed and resonated throughout the grand room. The second year class did quite well with the decorations. My partner's grip on my waist tightened and I looked up at him in question.
He was staring at the silver haired boy who was just standing outside with an air about him that made it quite obvious that he did not want to be here. "That's your brother, isn't it, Ichiru?" I asked in a quiet voice, my eyes trained on the girl dressed in a fancy version of a night gown skip into the ballroom like a child. "And there's the lady of the night."
I was suddenly lifted up off the ground and pressed up against Ichiru's chest. "What do you mean, hime?" He whispered into my ear, tickling my skin with his breath. "The only 'Lady of the Night' I see is in my arms."
I giggled softly and relaxed against him. "Way too cheesy, little Dove." He set me back down on my feet and held out his hand for me to take.
"Ready for the real show of the night?"
I placed my hand in his as we headed over to the little brunet who had her hair cut as short as a pixi, but not quite short enough to be considered as such. " Let's go pick up the granny in a night gown, shall we?" I joked.
"That's... rude... to say... hime...." He managed to say between bellows of laughs.
I grinned up at him. "But all too true." I slipped on the masquerade mask he had given to me just before our dance had begun.
I had just finished my private dance with Kaname-sama when I noticed a masked man and girl looking straight at me. I knew who the male was, but not the girl, maybe Maria? No. Maria doesn't have that hair colour. Who is that girl?
I walked over to the two of them as inconspicuously as I could manage and stood in front of them. "That was the most obvious 'I'm doing something I really shouldn't be doing' walk I have ever seen." The girl chuckled at me. "what are you? Five, or just a horrible liar?"
"That's enough, no need to tease her too much." The masked man, Ichiru, said to the girl quietly, but I could tell he was laughing at me as well.
I crossed my arms and huffed. "you don't have to be so mean."
The girl stopped laughing abruptly. "Mean? Mean? You think I was being mean?" she bellowed out. "Little girl you have a lot to learn about the real world if you think I was being 'mean' to you. I was simply making fun of you, but if you want me to really be mean I don't mind demonstrating."
She took a step forward and cupped my cheek in the palm of her hand--it felt like fire against my skin. "But my mother wishes to see you before I can even think about having my fun with you." She then began walking away, Ichiru pushing me to follow.
When we reached the old dorms that Shizuka had asked for me to meet her, Ichiru and the girl took off their masks. "Wha-wha?! Aren't you the new transfer in the senior class, Index?!" I freaked and pointed at the orange eyed girl who flashed me an evil smile. "What are you doing here? Do you know about vampires? Are you actually a vampire? If you are that's going against Kaname-sama and the school! What do you-"
"Would you SHUT THE HELL UP!" She shouted, cutting off my rant. "You're giving me a headache, brat." Index leaded against Ichiru and rested her head against his arm. "Now go over there and be a good little sacrifice--who's silent." She waved me off.
She's so different from when we first met. Has she been acting this whole time? My mind raced with questions as Index and Ichiru shoved me towards a room with a fainting couch and two vampires--Shizuka and Maria.
I was shoved closer and was suddenly in Shizuka's arms. "Such a sweet girl." She chuckled, but I could hear the sarcasm in her tone. "I wonder how Zero will feel, when her learns that because of her, a girl so dear to him was either turned into a level E or died all because of him."
"Such a tragic tale." Maria giggled in.
"Who cares?" Index inquired. "As soon as I confirm my suspicions her fate will rest in my hands." Her orange eyes flashed a pale pink colour and her grin became one that would haunt me in my nightmares. "The hunters won't even be able to identify her if I am correct." I shivered at the images she was forcing me to imagine.
"And if you are not?" Shizuka asked, her fangs coming closer to my neck.
Index shrugged. "We can leave her to the mortals to deal with, or you can keep her. I don't need a new toy."
Just as her fangs were about to graze me, the door was slammed open. "Zero!" I shouted, recognizing the male who had kicked open the door with a silver gun in hand.
"Awe, the lamb has joined the party." Index laughed as Ichiru and herself stood between Shizuka and I and Zero. "Go away, the unwanted are not welcome during a sacrifice."
He shot a bullet at Index, but it had no effect. "So she is a human? Not a vampire?" I found myself asking out loud.
"Not quite." Shizuka laughed as I was released and she leaped towards Zero with a sword in hand. "You two, this fight is between master and servant!" She called out to Index and Ichiru and they both backed off.
I watched silently as Kaname quickly left the room, thinking that he had ended Shizuka. Arrogant fool. I laughed in my thoughts as I walked into the room and stood before the pile of ashes and held a dagger in my hands. I sliced a deep cut along my palm and held out my hand, letting the blood drip onto the ashes. Soon the ashes turned into a child that looked no older than ten. "Welcome back from the dead, little immortal." I chuckled and lifted up the little girl with sakura pink eyes after wrapping her up in the kimono she once wore.
"I am grateful that you let me drink your blood before tonight, but must you really treat me like a child?" She pouted in my arms. "I believe I was the one who helped raise you not too many years ago."
"Yes, yes, but now that you're no longer a Pureblood, but one of my kind, that makes me your superior now." I carried her to my dorm room, Ichiru, Maria, my maids, and even Persephone and Adam were waiting for us. "Lookie who I found." I teased as I placed Shizuka down on my bed to sit as O'Sen went to get her some clothes that actually fit her now child body.
"So glad you're alive, Shizuka!" Maria smiled happily. "And you're so cute!"
"Just barely." the former Pureblood grumbled as she then followed O'Sen to get changed. "And please never call me that again. Ever."
"So what now?" Maria asked as she swung her feet, happily sitting on the edge of my desk.
I sighed and walked towards the window, staring up at the moon that was ever so high in the sky, it's reflected glow out shining the stars that scattered the midnight blue above. "Now we wait."
I took out a small box and held it open to them, revealing the pendents father had given to me so many years before. "And we complete the awakening on our own."
