River's PoV*
I couldn't even look up in his direction. I didn't wanna see his reaction. I felt like I was collapsing inside. We sat in silence for what felt like hours though it was probably only seconds, before Jinx leaned forward and wrapped his arms around me.
"Sweetie." He whispered softly as he ran his hand up and down my back. "Please stop apologizing. It's not your fault you're not ready. We're gonna figure this out together. Okay?" I nodded softly and he pulled away to kiss my cheek. "Let's go for a run."
I stared back at him for a moment wondering why exactly he thought that would be even a remotely good idea. "I think maybe if you shift, your wolf will do better with it, especially being around mine."
I guess it made sense. I nodded softly though I was still unsure. He smiled softly before grabbing my hand and leading me outside. As soon as our feet hit the grass I watched as Jinx disappeared only to have a wolf almost identical to mine standing in front of me. The fur was pitch black, and his eyes were almost a blood red.
I watched in awe as he trotted over to me and then licked my ankle. I could feel a small smile coming on and nodded softly before shifting. As soon as I did it, it felt like the entire world had changed with me. My wolf felt different. It was a hard feeling to describe, he felt happier, but he felt confused.
Jinx flashed a toothy grin before nodding his head to indicate he wanted me to lead the way. I stepped forward and with a swift burst of energy I took off. The entire area was surrounded by woods I had spent so much time exploring as a child. I could hear Jinx right behind me matching me step for step.
It had been a good two years since I had even been hunting with the pack through here and I still had every inch of the area memorized like the back of my hand. Granted I had been out and about a few times with Jamie and Corey, but just to come sit at the river.,and before I knew it we were at that exact river the three of us had played around when we were kids. I stopped and stared for a moment as Jinx came to a stop next to me. I could feel the happiness radiating off of him and it just made me feel good. My mate was happy.
I inched closer to the river before shifting back to human form, and Jinx quickly followed suit. He was smiling from ear to ear as he reached over to set a hand on my shoulder. "How do you feel now?"
I nodded softly as I looked over towards him. "Better." I took in all the familiar scents as all the memories came flooding back. It was right here Jamie had told me Austin was his mate. I had been right here when I had told him to 'just go for it' for the first time. I had then went on to explain when I found my mate I wouldn't let anything stop me from being with them.
Sure back then I hadn't know exactly what situation I would have been in now, but I meant it. That's all I had wanted for so long. Now I had my mate sitting right next to me, and I had spent the last several days avoiding mating. Me two years ago, would kick present day me's ass.
"I'm ready." The words left my lips without me even realizing it, but as soon as they did I was happy I said them.
"Are you sure?" He asked sounding hopeful. I nodded softly. "When?"
"Now." He stood up but I quickly grabbed his wrist and pulled him against me. "Here."
His eyes widened slightly. "Lube." He said getting ready to stand up again.
"Under the rock." I said pointing. He stared at me confused for a moment before I chuckled. "I brought it out here awhile ago to tease Jamie."
He chuckled and shook his head. "You two are a lot closer than most people realize aren't you?"
