Light beckoned him away from his slumber. In his experience, light was good. He wrenched himself onto his feet and stumbled towards it, blindly. As he reached the source he came upon a door. Without hesitation he turned the doorknob and was once again blinded by the abundant light. Once his eyes were adjusted, the faces of his comrades, past and present beamed back at him across a lush field. He ran, overjoyed at the presence of all the men he had once laughed and fought alongside.

A vast cityscape, a sprawling urban metropolis lit the background like the scene was from a painting. He thought about the chance that this was heaven, that he had left his body to find eternal peace. Then he looked up.

Glaring beams of yellow and purple bore down on the serene landscape, shimmering like crystals. He watched a Scarab tear across the field and lay waste to all of the men he had once known. Evacuation transports sailed across the red-hued sky before being torn to shreds by approaching Banshees. Now it looked more like hell. The screams. The haunting screams. He had seen this all before.

The horrific events of his military career were playing out once again before his eyes. His home planets glassing, the evacuation of Arcadia, the recent Scarab massacre, all memories he was trying his best to forget. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed Knight Squad, alone, unsupported in the hostile environment, everyone else decimated. They called out to him “We need you! Help us!” and other desperate pleas for their very survival.

He knew then that this was only a dream, a vision of the fate that could become of his men. He wasn’t a corpse just yet and he still had a purpose to complete. Knight Squad was as good as dead without his leadership and he wasn’t going to let them die in vain. They were all going to get out alive, or die with their hands around a covie’s throat.
