“Blanca, I think I know what you had planned by letting her go,” Jurian wakes me up. I rub my eyes. He passes me an oversized shirt. I take it and sheepishly put it on.
“What?” I ask. I didn’t plan anything in particular…
“You planned on provoking Otro, right? Melecio rang me this morning saying that they’re pissed. Very pissed. But that’s good. Very good. Thank you. I’m sorry I was so angry at you, Blanca.”
He’s standing beside the bed. He’s wearing nothing but a fluffy white robe. He looks kind of funny in it but I somewhat like it.
“I don’t wonder why you were angry. It’s okay, really,” I say. “So what are you doing now?”
“We’re going to win, so I already have a plan in mind. I’ll change it around, though.”
“Did Aneesah say anything during the interrogation?”
“The girl? Actually, yes,” Jurian says. “She denied everything at first. But then she said that Otro was planning on making members of Albens join them. But that’s about it. It smells fishy, though. They obviously were trying to overthrow us.”
“What’s the plan, then?”
“That, I can’t tell you.”
“Why?”
“You’ll see.”
A large red glass ball drops beside me on the bed. The white cat sits down and rolls it around.
“Are you interrogating more people?” I ask.
“Very likely will,” he says. “But don’t worry, really. It’s a war.”
“I’ll try not to.”
“Great. Well, there’s no need to wear your uniform today. Let’s take some rest. It’s better to take a break before actually preparing, right?”
“Okay.”
“Ah, by the way, I have something to ask you…”
“What is it?”
He reaches into his pants pocket. From it he produces a small box. He gets on one knee and opens the box. Inside it there’s a ring. It’s golden with a pair of gemstones, one white and one red.
“Jurian, I…”
“Blanca, will you marry me?”
Tears are in my eyes. I look away. It’s still two years to go before we can actually get married. But he bought a ring this early… it’s beautiful. The two stones are beside each other, almost touching. They glimmer in the light of the lamps.
“Yes… I will.”
Jurian hugs me, lifting me up from the bed and spinning me around.
“That’s great… that’s really great,” he whispers. “Blanca, I love you. We’ll live through this together. Let’s be happy. Happy together to the end of our lives.”
“That’s cheesy.”
“Only for you, hun, only for you.”
I giggle. “Yes. Only for me.”
“After-engagement dinner?”
“Sure,” I say. “Where do you want to go?”
“How about the restaurant we used to eat when we were kids?”
“Back when we came with our parents?”
“Yeah.”
“Sounds good to me,” I say.
