I just finished talking to an old friend and when I went back to our room, I saw Beiron leaning on the head board.
"I'm sorry for that call. Did I woke you up?" I asked while walking towards our bed."Not really. I just felt that you're not on my side." He replied then rested his left arm on my shoulder as I sitted on the bed. "What's up with that call?"
"N-nothing." I stammered.
He give me an I-don't-believe-you look and so I exasperatedly sighed.
I nervously looked at him. "I received a call from an old friend in PB (Philippine Biotechnology) and she asked for my professional help-"
"And?" He cutted.
"And I couldn't say no." I nervously replied.
"So what's with the frown? There's nothing wrong with that." He said.
"No, there is. The site will be outside the country."
"But for sure you'll come back right away."
"I can't really tell. You know, being in the field, base on my experience it always takes time to finish our business."
"For how long?" He asked with a frown.
"The minimum is 2 weeks."
"Khamya!"
"I'm sorry."
"You know our agreement, our goals this year. We both agreed about it."
"I know the first is that we would find and spend more time with our family. But sweetheart this is urgent and important. If it's not, I wouldn't break our agreement Besides, the year just starts. I'll make up for it."
"Yeah, it just started and you immediately broke it." He said then face his back on me and pretended t sleep.
My heart aches at his response. We just got our first day for this year and here we are, feeling disappointed.
"Beiron..." I called him but he didn't budge.
I sighed heavily and get back to sleep.
The next day, I woke up without Beiron's trace in our room. I sighed.
"I guess he's still mad at me." I sadly said then went to the bathroom and prepare myself. After a couple of minutes, I went downstairs and saw Mila.
"Aleng Mila, have you seen Beiron?"
"Good morning po Ma'am Khamya. Nasa porch po."
"I see. Thank you po." I nervously took the path towards the porch. "I'm not good at this but I have to apologize to him." I mumbled.
When I reached the place he glance at me and I was like melting upon his gaze.
"I'm sorry." I immediately said.
He put his cup of coffee to the table and looked at me. "For what?"
I was stunned for a moment. (Did he forgot his total spurning of my feelings last night?tsk!) In my thoughts. "For what I decided last night. Don't worry I'll try to talk it out with my friend."
"Don't."
"Excuse me?"
"You can go."
"I'm confused. You said last night-"
"I was a jerk last night and I'm sorry." He sincerely said and walk towards where I'm standing. Then he cupped my face and look intently at me. "I'm sorry. I was just surprise and thinking of you gone for months just hightened my emotions. I'll miss you and so is Trixie."
I was just speechless.
"But it's your job and you can't help it, right? Or else I won't agree to this trip." He said with a smile.
I chuckled. "Yeah, I can't."
"Okay. Now go. You're friend might have gray hairs now." He laughed and so was I.
"I bet she do. You've keep me for a while now and I'm late with our time agreement." I said then give him a goodbye kiss. And before getting inside the car he spoke again.
"No men with you in that trip?"
I chuckled. "What's that suppose to mean? You know this profession is dominated by men. But I don't know yet. I'll try to ask Dr.Karina." I answered.
"Note that. And tell her that if you do have men with you, well, better be married or engaged or else she'll have to get an extra personnel."
I laughed at what he said. (For sure, he's referring himself to that extra.)
"Got to go sweetie." I finally said then drove my way to meet my ex-colleague Dr.Karina Santos.
"What trip could this be?" I mumbled.
