"Mom!!!" I screamed in a panicky voice. I jump up from my laptop at my desk watching a live stream of the news on YouTube.

Josh and Jake rush out of their rooms into the hallway in response to my scream. I rush past them downstairs to the kitchen and almost collide into my mom.

She was carrying a large cardboard box filled with canned soup, vegetables, fruits, granola bars, bags of rice, and other non-perishable items.

"Oop, sorry honey almost ran into you!"

She walks around me to put the heavy box on the table with another 3 filled boxes. My attention then wanders to the kitchen, where every cabinet and draw is open and empty.

"Mom, Did you see the news just now?!"

"Yes, honey I saw it! You and your brothers need to start preparing your clothes together. I'm heading out to Menard's for some supplies. Meanwhile you and your brothers need to pack everything in the truck and be ready when I get back."  She grabs the keys to our second car and speed walks to the garage.

"Is she insane???"

"Wait what? Mom what are you saying?!" I exclaim charging behind her.

"Mom what's going on?" Jacob inquires flying down from upstairs along with Josh.

"Mom it's a chaotic mess outside! You can't leave!" Josh yells.

"This can't be happening. No way..."

All kinds of thoughts and questions raced through my mind.

"Everyone calm down! I am leaving for a little while to get some more important things that we're gonna need. This is a very dire situation that we're in and I need you all to be strong and smart right now. Y'all better be packed up and ready to go when I get back. Understood?"

"Yes." we said calmly in unison.

Her eyes averted to me. "Take care of your brothers while I'm gone, Kayla." she says right before she smiles at all of us, and walks out the door leading to the garage.

....little did we know, that was the last living memory we would have of our mother...

*An Hour Later*

After we followed mom's instructions and made sure the truck was loaded, the 3 of us waited in the living room in silence. A little while after she left, our house lost power and we were unable to keep track of anything happening in the outside world. Luckily, I charged my phone to 100% in case something like this happened.

All that was left was to wait for Mom's return.

"Kayla! I-I think Mom's back!" Jacob says anxiously. He jumps up from the living room floor and runs to the front door.

I turn my head around to him from the sofa and raise a brow, "I didn't here the garage open."

"Maybe she got alotta crap and can't unlock the door." Josh suggested.

"Yeah! That's gotta be it! She needs our help with the groceries and- "

(Bump.    Bump.    Thump.)

"Huh? What was that?" Jacob asks.

I get up and cautiously to the front door, but I hesitate to open because of the unusual bumping on the door. Then I hear groaning.

"What the hell?"

"Guys, don't move. And don't make a sound." I whisper to Josh and Jake.

I walk to the living room window and slightly open the curtain. What I see outside is unbelievable.

Standing on the opposite side of our front door is a man. But this man's shirt is all torn and bloody. He is bleeding from the arm and his face............half of it is all gone, as if it was bitten off. There's dangling flesh from his jaw. He continues to scratch and bang on the door.

"He's trying to get in." I think to myself. "He's one of those things they were talking about on tv! one of things that'll eat you alive!"

As I look beyond this..this..thing, there were more! There were like 10- no, 20 more of them! They were slowly walking around our neighborhood, ready to eat.

"Where's mom?!" I think. Where ever she is, I can't wait until she gets back. We have to go! More and more were piling at the door because of the one.

"Joshua, Jacob! We need to go! Now!" I yell to them.

"Wait! Wait! What about mom?!" Jacob asked concerned.

"There's no time, Jake. We need to leave. We can try to find her at Menard's but we can't stay here."

"But- "

"She's right Jake! We gotta go!"

"I'll leave her a quick note and tell her we left to dads house in case she comes back and we're not here."

I wrote the note in just enough time, left it on the kitchen table, and took Josh and Jake into the garage.

As we get into the car, I open the garage door and start the car. Five of them see us and pour into the garage, piling around the front of the truck.

"Uh-Oh, Kayla what do we do?!" Josh questions frantically from the passengers side.

"Im going to get us outta here!" I slam my foot on the gas to get away from this mess.

The infected claw and scratch and bang on the car. I struggle as I try to make my way out of the drive way with all of them piling on the car. Im finally able to get past them and onto the street. I drive us off in search of mom.

Haha. Damn....this is really happening, huh?
