Kinsley
"You need to pack faster," she says as Daniel slowly places his supplies into his pack. "Iris could be being attacked right now and you're organizing your food bags alphabetically."
He gives her a look. "If Miss Cooper was being attacked at this time, it wouldn't matter if we leave right this second or twenty minutes from now; we couldn't help."
Kinsley sighs. "Aren't you supposed to care if she dies or is in danger? 'She's the key to it all'—whatever that means."
Daniel stops packing and stands up. He's standing a bit too close for her liking and is glaring down at her with hard, dark eyes. "I'm only following orders. I'm going to find Miss Cooper and protect her because that is what Caesar ordered me to do."
"Such a good puppy, you are," she mocks.
He ignores her comment. "I personally think he's overreacting about her safety, but that isn't for me to decide. I will not—however—let myself follow you into whatever it is you did before. I can tell that there is something you don't want Miss Cooper to find at the Slayter home. I don't know what it is, and to be honest, I don't care. But I'm not going to be dragged into it, nor will I rush to solve your problems, they are not my priority, Miss Cooper is."
Kinsley's eyebrows furrows. She can't leave without Daniel, not without looking suspicious, but if Iris or Alex finds out what she did, what she helped do, they would never trust her again. "Look, if they get to that house and see what is there, there won't be a Miss Cooper to protect. It will break her, and I don't think that Caesar wants a broken Iris Cooper."
Daniel narrows his eyes, working through options. He sighs, bends down and picks up his sword, sheathing it. "Let's go then."
