Kinsley

The town of Kooskooskie is only about five miles away, but it's long enough for Kinsley to replay the conversation outside of the Slayter house over and over again in her mind.

Daniel wants her to go with him? But why? Probably because he doesn't want her with Iris. He still thinks she's a threat to her.

She doesn't blame him.

"Miss Cooper said there's a town not far from here. Kooskooskie." Daniel's voice startles her and she twists around.

He's on the phone.

"Just meet us at a gas station."

Pause.

"Then we'll meet on the road."

Daniel's voice is low, lower than usual. He's getting frustrated. "We're not going to be landing in the middle of the road, obviously, though I doubt anybody would notice."

Kinsley sighs, walks to him and plucks the phone from his hand.

"Hey!" Daniel protests.

"Just meet us in the damn road! We'll be there in less than half an hour." She hangs up before whoever was on the other end could speak.

She holds the phone out to Daniel who slowly takes it.

"We should go." She takes off her jacket and shoves it in her small travel bag. "There looks like there might be a storm coming."

He follows her gaze to the large dark clouds that are swiftly making their way toward them, toward Kooskooskie.

Daniel frowns.

"Think we'll make it before it hits?" she asks.

"Probably, but it'll be close." He clips on his day pack and rolls his shoulders as he spreads his dark brown tipped white wings. "You ready?" His dark eyes search her.

Kinsley exhales and nods. "Yeah, let's go." She unfurls her shadowy wings and starts getting ready to lift off.

"Kinsley." His voice makes her pause. She turns to him to see that his eyes are down. "You know, I didn't choose you to come because I wanted to keep an eye on you. I know that you wouldn't do anything that would harm Miss Cooper."

Her eyes narrow. "Then why did you want me with you?"

"You're a good soldier, a good fighter. I saw you during the battle, while you were facing off their leader." Kinsley takes notice of the fact that he said their leader instead of your. "I'm going to be with a group that I'm not familiar with. I know they'll have each other's backs, but I need to know someone will have mine." He lifts his eyes and Kinsley meets them. "I trust you."

"Maybe you shouldn't," she says quietly. "I don't know what will happen if the Dark Angels attack. I know I'll fight, but if we lose..." She trails off, afraid of what she means to say.

Daniel takes a step forward, but goes no further. "What happens, will happen." He gives her a nod. "You'll do what you believe is right, and you'll do what you need to do."

Kinsley stares into his dark eyes, stuck in the shadowy abyss. A roll of thunder is the only thing able to bring her back to reality.

She takes a deep breath and looks to the storm ahead. "We should go. The storm is moving fast."

Daniel watches her for a few more seconds, then nods. "At least it's only about five miles." And without saying anything else, he lifts into the air.

Yeah, five miles.

Kinsley follows, unsure.
