It was dark now. I must have been walking for hours.
I can't remember the name of the next town over (I think it starts with an H?), but I its like three hours from the one I just came from.
I knew I probably looked scary as hell. My hair felt damp from the drizzle of rain, it was caked with mud and leaves and twigs, my cheek hurt, and I had later discovered that I had a scratch that was bleeding slightly on my face. My legs were grazed and bruising, and I had gotten grass stains and dirt patches all over my clothes.
My poor leather Jacket.
I had ditched my bag an hour back, after eating the apple I had, all it was doing, was giving me a back ache and making it harder to breathe. Every breath I took was agonizing. I had thanked the gods that I had taken my wallet to school, so I had fifty bucks in my wallet and a grand on my credit card. I had left behind my school books, whats the point in hauling those around?
"Listen," Daemon said "Can you hear that?"
I stopped moving, partly from shock that he had finally talked to me and listened to my surroundings. Closing my eyes so I could focus more, I could hear crickets chirping and owls hooting . . . . and rushing water.
A stream!
Following my ears, I limped maybe ten feet, and pushed my way through thick bushes, to find an ankle deep stream. Sighing in relief, as I placed my hands in the water then splashed my face.
My cheek stung a bit, but I ignored the pain, and started to wash down my body until I was drenched in fresh stream water.
Sighing as I sat back, I reached out my mind to Daemon.
I needed answers. Now.
"Don't bother, you're not ready to know yet." Daemon stated before I could even get a thought in.
'Daemon why can't you just tell me?' I said getting to my feet and trying to keep the scowl off my face.
"Simple. You're not ready to know this kind of stuff yet. Its my fault they are after you, but don't worry, when you find me, we will end them." Anger and malice slipped into his voice as he said that, it made me shudder.
I ignored him and began to walk aimlessly. My body was growing tired, and I knew I would have to stop and rest soon.
But a light in the distance chased my exhaustion away, making me move faster towards it. The rain was pouring down now. The closer I got the more lights appeared until I could hear the sounds of cars on the road.
I had reached the next town.
"Stay off the road. They could be waiting for you here."
I quickly crossed the road and went inside the first motel I saw. It was warm and dry and smelled of chocolate.
When I closed the door, a tinkle of a bell sounded, making me jump.
"Can I help you dear?" Asked a grey haired woman. She shuffled up to the counter.
"Y-yes can I-I please h-have a room for the ni-ight?" I couldn't stop my teeth from chattering.
"Sure, thats fourty eight dollars." I pulled out my fifty and handed it over, taking the kay and change, then headed upstairs. I reached my room and stepped inside quickly closing and locking it behind me. I just stood there with my back pressed up on the door, taking in the room.
There was a double bed in the middle of the room, with a bed side table on the left. There was a small TV on some drawers, to put your clothes in, and a door that probably lead to the bathroom, the kitchen was in the far corner with a stove, a counter top, a mini fridge and some cupboards.
I so badly wanted to have a hot shower, but I have nothing to change into. The thought of putting back on my sweaty and muddy clothes again disgusted me. Maybe theres a Op shop somewhere.
Sighing, I left the motel, smiling tightly at the old woman. I moved quickly to avoid becoming too wet. Luckily, there was an Op shop around the corner and thank god it was still open.
'Maybe I shouldn't have thrown away my backpack. . . . ' I thought. I need a bag to carry all my clothes. I didn't go crazy on the card, I just bought two pairs of everything. Well, I bought five pairs of underwear. It all came up to the cost of fifty dollars. But I needed a bag too, so a bought one for an extra five.
Moving quickly back to the motel, with my bag on my back and my clothes all inside, I wished Jane was okay.
I woke up to the sun shining on my eyes. Damn. I'd forgotten to close the curtains.
I'd have to move on today. Go somewhere else. Daemon hadn't talked to me since last night.
My stomach growled, so I clutched it. Okay, eat first, leave after.
I got up and quickly had another shower, then throwing on random clothes, I packed everything I had and uhm, ahem, taking the three in one bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
When I was downstairs, the lady who should of been at the counter wasn't, so I left my key on the otherside of her desk. But Daemon felt uneasy and hesitant, which made me question where she was. I shrugged it off and walked out the door, into the foggy air. I followed a map I had found in my room and looked for the bus stop, so I could go straight there after my breakfast. But a screech of tyres behind me, made me jump to the side, away from the road.
A big truck was losing control on the road, swerving like crazy. My breathing started to get unsteady as I watched in horror as it crashed loudly into a tree. I hesitated then. Should I go help? Keep walking? Run away?
Damn. Swallowing my fear and hesitance, I quickly walked/limped as fast as I could to the truck, a man was starting to emerge from the wreckage, he stumbled to the ground, and started mumbling to himself.
"Sir? Are you okay?" I asked as I closed the distance between us.
"Melly. . . No . . . Mella? Menda. . . Molly! Molly!" The man wasn't making any sense. Who's Molly?
I moved around him and looked into the truck to see if anyone else was in there, but no. It was empty.
The man cried out in relief, making me turn to look at him, he had his hand held out, slowly stroking the air and smiling. I frowned. I closed my eyes then called on Daemons eyes, he granted and when I opened them, everything was inhanced. I could see the smallest cracks in the road and clearly see an abandoned cabin on the side of the Mountain behind the town.
I looked to the man and gasped. His Aura was black with small swirls of red. Something was consuming him, I looked to what he was stroking, and immediately stepped back in horror. A small demon was grinning at him like a mad man . . . thing.
It hissed showing sharp yellow fangs and reached out to him with a black misty kind of looking arm, red claws peeking out under the mist, encircling the mans arm, clawing it, drawing blood, the man winced in pain.
"Leave them. There's nothing you can do for him." Daemon said softly.
I did as he said and quickly left.
Demons. I had never seen one in person before. Daemon has told me of every super in existence. Well, the important ones that would hunt us or the common ones that over populate the earth, making you grow up with them and making you think they're like you. Human.
I shuddered as I thought of that poor man and his wretched master. But one thing kept bugging me.
Who's Molly?
"Drop it Maddie, don't dwell with these thoughts or the demons will notice. Just drop it." Daemon said sternly, scolding her slightly.
I scoffed but did as he said anyway. I found the bus station just in time as bus pulled up, and decided that I should skip breakfast and take the bus now. It was heading for Lakevile, Minnesota.
Why not? I'm not staying for long. I just need to get somewhere far away from here.
