I knew something was wrong. Even though, the fall leaves were rustling in the wind like any other day, even if the dog was barking next door like it always did, my heart clenched as if everything was about to change.
Something told me that something bad was about to happen. Call it fate or merely the wonders of the universe, I knew. If only I could float on the wind, steering my way to reach him. I watched longingly as the birds above flew, free souls in the breeze that seemed different, somehow new.
As sudden as a lightning bolt, all anger I had mustered turned into longing and concern. Fear clawed at my heart, my body trembling like a withering fern. Trying to ignore my rising panic, I attempted to lose myself within the pages of a book. Though, to no avail, as my mind wandered back to him, as my hand shook.
Stubborn as I am, I crawled under my covers, pretending as if the blanket was a barrier between my bubbling hysteria and me. Though, no matter how tightly I squeezed my eyes, seeking comfort in the darkness, his face was all I could see.
Pushing my face deeper into my pillow, I willed myself to think about something else. It didn't work, I might as well have tried to lose all sense.
When it was all too overwhelming, when the longing and panic drowned my heart, I finally gave in. I tried to hold the tears in, but didn't succeed. Getting in my red Toyota, I drove as fast as I could, all the while feeling as if I had committed an unmistakable crime, a sin.
How was he? Was he alright? Were my doubts true?
If only I had listened. If only I knew.
