| O N E | Write a scene where a character is Christmas shopping.
"Ooh! That's nice!" My best friend Beverly said, holding up a sparkly dress from a nearby clothing rack. "If you still need to buy me a Christmas present..." she trailed off, looking at me expectantly.
I just laughed. "Sorry, I've already got your present."
She frowned. "Okay, because of that, you're in charge of the coffee run. A medium toffee nut mocha, please,"
"Sure, Bev," I said, picking up my heavy shopping bags and strolling over to the nearest coffee shop in the mall. As I stood in line for the cashier to take my order, I looked around and noticed a barista trying to catch my eye. I stared back at him. He was pretty cute. Okay, more than cute. He sent me a big grin that made my heart flutter, and I smiled back nervously.
"Um, Miss? Can I take your order?" The cashier asked me impatiently.
"Oh, sorry!" I stammered, and ordered the drinks. When I looked back at the barista, he was smiling and shaking his head at me. Unable to resist, I stuck my tongue out at him. We had a conversation with facial expressions for a few minutes as he made the drinks. When he was finished, he turned away from me and scribbled something on the cups. Without a word, he slid the two coffees onto the pick-up ledge and went back to work without a word. I picked up the cups and took them to a nearby table, sitting down to read what was written. Beside the "warning! Extremely hot!" label, the word 'you're' was written, and the word 'warning' was crossed out, so it read 'you're extremely hot!'
On Beverly's cup, he had written a phone number. I smiled and glanced up at him. He smiled and winked, then mouthed "Call me,"
I quickly took out my phone, typed his number into my contacts, and sent him a text:
'Hi! I'm Dani. What's your name, Mr Barista?'
I tried to keep my eyes focused on other things as I drank my coffee, and a couple minutes later, he texted back:
'The name's Travis. Not supposed to be working on the job, though. Care to join me after my shift ends in an hour, though?'
'Sure,' I replied. After all, Beverly had to go home in half an hour. 'Sounds good!'
A few moments later, Beverly walked in and grabbed her cup from the table, taking a big gulp of her coffee. I was still grinning like an idiot. It wasn't until she'd finished her drink that she noticed what was written on her cup.
"Why are there numbers on here?" She asked me, puzzled.
I just shrugged and smiled, and I could've sworn the barista behind the counter was smiling, too.
