Ciel woke up to a cup of tea and a note.

- I'll be back shortly, I've an urgent errand.

P.S. the tea is Earl Grey, your favorite.

Ciel rolls his eyes, getting out of bed to situate himself. This is the third time this week, he thought to himself. What kind of 'errands' are more important than your sworn duties. After a while of fighting with himself, he realized the conversation is pointless and continues to ready himself for the day.

He makes his way down the stairs of the now empty manor.  Happening upon the kitchen he sighs to himself as he realizes, after all the years he used to guard and fight, he never learned to cook. Though with Sebastian around there was no need for such trivial skills. He wanders around before finding a pastry tart in the cabinet. He sniffs it, then shrugs.

"No Ciel! Don't eat that!" A voice loudly vibrates through the kitchen. Ciel immediately snaps his body toward the voice. "I-I mean... sir.. master.. that tart is no good. Let me prepare you something more nutritious." Ciel's frown deeps when he sees his butler standing in the doorway with a brown paper bag. "Groceries are more important than your duties?" Sebastian began to speak but was quickly interrupted. "No no, there's no excuse you could give me to make me let this go." Ciel looks at him with a look of disapproval before continuing. "I'll be in my study, don't bother me until lunch." He brushes past him, making his way up the hall. Sebastian sighs before moving to put the groceries away.

As he approaches the door he hears something all too familiar. Ciel pleading and crying on the other side and he knew exactly why. He was having another nightmare about the death of his parents.. The rest of the staff.. Elizabeth. After losing everyone so close to him and gaining immortality, the nightmares became endless.

Sebastian quietly moves around the room before gently shaking his master awake. "Master, it's just another nightmare." Ciel looks up at him with tears running down his cheek. He suddenly grabs Sebastian's waist and hugs him tightly, weeping softly. "Promise me.. Promise you'll never leave me like the others..." Sebastian's heart pangs as he gently rubs his gloved fingers through Ciel's hair. "I wouldn't dream of it, Ciel."

This was their new normal. Formalities drop and hearts comfort one another.. "Sebastian.." Ciel speaks softly, his voice muffled by the fabric of his butler's petticoat. Any grudge he had melts away in that moment as the weight of remembering it was just them, alone, settles into his mind again.

He looks up at his butler, the one loyal constant in his life, and asks, "Why do you stay?.. The contract was terminated as soon as the underworld got word of my immortality-", "I know." He quickly interrupts in response. "Then, why?" Sebastian thought to himself for a moment, choosing his words carefully.

"...Because you're the only real companionship I've ever known.. Because the years I spent with you gave a purpose.. You made me feel needed. No no, that's not right. You made me feel wanted. Sure, the contract was started due to a need to be saved, but Ciel... as the years went by, you never once left me behind. So why wouldn't I give you that same loyalty..."

Ciel ponders his words. My word... He thought as his heart aches. "Then... you must promise to stay. Under any circumstances can you leave my side. You must always come back to me. If you break this, you must never come back." Sebastian stops stroking Ciel's hair and lowers him self to his eye level. "No matter how many centuries have came and gone, you have never once changes. Still as helpless and needy as the day we met... I will stay. You have my word, my lord." Ciel blushes as Sebastian's words meet him. "Eternity is an awfully long time to be a butler..." The butler smiles to himself before speaking, "I've already gone thirteen-thousand years, what's thirteen-thousand more..."

To be continued...
