Chapter Twelve
"Are you going to Brody's halloween party?" Amber asked me, leaning against the locker next to mine.
"I wasn't invited."
"But I was invited and I'm inviting you."
"I don't want to go."
"But I want you to go! Please don't make me go alone." She pleaded while I sighed.
"You don't understand. Halloween is a holiday for girls to have an excuse to dress like sluts and not get called out for it. I don't want to be involved with that. I'm not ready for my secret to get out." I whispered the last part. Amber pouted, but nodded her head.
"Ok fine I'll just get someone else to go with me."
"Thank you." I stuffed my my final book into its' resting place when someone covered my eyes with their hands.
"Boo." A deep voice murmured in my ear. A smile formed on my face.
"Oh no I'm so scared. Who could it possibly be?" I turn around, grabbing onto Jordan's hoodie, and leaned into him. "Look I caught a wild Jordan."
He gave me an amused look before going in for the kill and kissing my cheek. My face flushed and he laughed.
"Are you ready to go home?" I opened my mouth to respond, but I was cut off. "And I already told your dad I was driving you home cause I have my mom's' car today."
"When did you get my dad's number?"
"When our families had dinner together last week. He said he realized that we were spending a lot of time together so if something happened or he couldn't get a hold of you, he wanted to have someone he can contact."
"Your mom doesn't have my number."
"Yes she does." I frowned.
"How? I never gave it to her."
"I know. I did." I quirked my eyebrow at him. "Same reason your dad has my number." I smacked his shoulder. "Ow! What was that for?"
"You didn't ask! What if I just got a random text from a number I didn't know asking where you were? I wouldn't answer it!"
"I'm sorry." He pouted adorably and pulled me into a hug, nuzzling his nose into my cheek. I tried to stay angry, but him being so close to me made me giggle bashfully. "Do you forgive me now?"
"You guys are gonna make me barf." I paused before turning to Amber. I honestly forgot she was standing there. Oops.
"As long as you miss my shoes I'm good." I smiled at her sarcastically.
"Why don't you guys just date already?" My smile disappeared and I noticed how loose Jordan's grip on me has become.
"Who said we wanted to date?" My voice sounds hollow. "I'll see you tomorrow, Amber. Come on Jordan." I pulled away and walked toward an exit, feeling my throat tightening and my eyes starting to sting.
Why does she always have to do this to me? Why can't she just never leave things alone? First she tries to force me into revealing my leg to our entire class and now she has made things uncomfortable with Jordan. I knew things were too good to be true, and him letting go of me is just the icing on top of the cake. He obviously doesn't feel the same, maybe I am doing the right thing by not telling him the entire story still. I don't know what to do anymore.
The ride home was silent and slightly awkward. My eyes never wavered from its' position staring out the window. Occasionally I felt Jordan's gaze trained on me, but I didn't pay any attention. He parked in front of my house and shut off the car, but made no move to exit.
"Stacey," I turned to face him slowly. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, I promise." I smiled to assure him.
"Did what Amber said make you upset?"
"I'm not upset at what she said. She just keeps bringing stuff up and I don't wanna deal with it right now."
"So it wasn't just her 'why are we not dating' comment?" I gave a hard stare to Jordan.
"I'm not that shallow."
"Then can you tell why you're upset?" The tension in the car raised as he stared intensly back into mine.
"Can we go to my room to finish this conversation? I'd rather be somewhere more private." WIthout a word he exited the car and made his way to my side. I opened the door and he grabbed my hand, helping me step out onto the ground. I expected him to let go, but he just intertwined our fingers. I smiled inwardly. Maybe I was wrong earlier.
Jordan and I sat in silence on my bed. My eyes stayed unblinking as I gathered my thoughts.
"I'm trying to figure out how I want to say this, without sounding dramatic." I force a laugh. Jordan wraps one of his arms around my shoulder. I lean my head onto him and sigh. "Amber wanted me to go to a party."
"A party?"
"I'm a different person than I was a year ago and I don't think she fully understands that. She just wouldn't let me have a say in what she wanted me to do." I raised my head up and looked up at him. "I'd rather spend alone time with you than go to a party with a whole bunch of people drunk off their asses."
"So you're not upset about her dating comment?"
"No for some reason it set me off though. I don't completely understand my thought process either. I do want to say I am completely content with where we're at right now. I'm just happy that you're in my life and I don't want to lose you."
Jordan gazed at me intently, as if he was trying to memorize every part of my face. His hand traveled to my cheek, his thumb pacing slightly against it. He pulled my face closer to his and pressed our lips together for a slow, gentle kiss. The butterflies swarmed as he pulled away, still leaving his forehead on mine. After pecking my lips one last time, Jordan pulled my body into his and wrapped his arms around me. I hugged my arms around his neck in response.
"How did I meet such a great girl?" He mumbled. As guilt descended on me, I hugged him tighter, before letting him go completely and pulled away. I smiled weakly.
"Wanna watch a movie?" I tried to change the subject.
"Sure, what movies?"
"Avengers?" I asked for my favorite movie, biting my lip. Jordan stared at the motion for a second.
"Anything for you."
"Ew what are you still doing here?" I jolted awake at the sound of my dad's voice. The credits rolled on the screen. I noticed Jordan and I were laying on my living room couch. My dad stood looking down at us, arms crossed. Jordan leaped up from his position on the couch
"I'm so sorry Mr. Cohen, we just fell asleep. I didn't mean for anything to happen." He began to ramble as my dad's angry facade cracked. The laughter exploded from him as Jordan's face changed to confusion.
"That was just too good! And son I told you to call me Joshua." He smacked Jordan's back in a friendly manner.
"I'm sorry," He paused. "Joshua."
"He's finally learning!" My dad joked. "Jordan, would you like to join us for dinner?"
"Sure, I'd love to." Jordan replied staring straight at me. Oy vey my heart.
