Chapter Seven
"Hey, hottie." My locker shut, almost clipping my fingers. I turned in annoyance just to find another nightmare from my past, Braden Watson, star varsity running back. He had platinum blonde hair, pale blue eyes, tan skin, and perfect straight white teeth. Braden certainly grew into his looks since the last time I saw him, but Jordan was still more attractive. Wait what?
"What do you want?" I turned back to my locker to continue putting away my books.
"Stacey?"
"That's my name, don't wear it out."
"The rumors are true then."
"What rumors?" I turned my attention back to him, eyes blazing. He smirked and a chill ran up my spine.
"You know. Rudy High School's golden girl returning after conspicuously disappearing for a year, having changed who she talked to, what she dressed like, and even acting stupider."
"What the hell are you talking about jackass?" My voice raised a bit.
"Oh come on limpy, no need to get mad at little ol' me." He used a mocking tone.
"What did you just call me?" My voice was low and filled with menace.
"Limpy, why so serious?" He said each word slowly.
"You bastard!" I took a step closer, ready to pounce, when an arm wrapped around my waist.
"Don't stoop to his level." A sultry voice whispered in my ear. I shivered and he chuckled.
"Just let me punch him in the face."
"You'll get in trouble."
"You gonna let your boyfriend fight all your battles." Jordan's arm tensed around me.
"I'm not her boyfriend, but I'd gladly pumble you to the ground." Braden looked scared for a second, but he masked it quickly.
"Just because Stacy's mom has got it goin on doesn't mean you can hog her all to herself." He grabbed me out of Jordan's arms and into his own, tears coming to my eyes.
"Let go of me!"
"Better start getting comforta-" He drifted off with a strangled scream as I elbowed him in the stomach and pulled away, back to the lockers. Next Jordan sent a fist flying with a look of fury that terrified even me. When the blood started flowing from Braden's nose, I came back to my senses.
"Jordan stop right now!" I shrieked. He paused, fist mid air. He looked down to his bloody fist then to me with wide eyes. Jordan stood up from his position above Braden slowly, eyes still locked with mine. Tentatively he opened his arms and raised an eyebrow. I chuckled darkly and shook my head, letting the tears fall. Quickly I closed the gap between us and hugged him tight.
"I'm sorry you had to see that." He lead me away from the scene and into the cafeteria.
"Thank you." I said after a pause.
"He made you cry. I couldn't let him get away with that." He sat me down then took the seat beside me.
"I used to be friends with him." My head dropped into my hands. "I'm so stupid."
"Stacey, you're not stupid." He grabbed my hands and pulled them down. "He is just an idiotic butthead."
"How much did you hear?" He looked down from my gaze. "Oh."
"Will you explain some of that to me?" His attention turned back to me.
"What do you mean?" I gulped.
