Janelle and I looked pretty much nothing alike. The only thing our father seemed to have given us both were an unusual shade of gray eyes, and a small but wide nose. She sat on a park bench, wearing black aviators, a black leather jacket, dark blue jeans and black stilletos. She was still thinner than me and if she had stood she would be a few inches taller than me. I sat down next to her and looked away, watching as a group of kids chased after a soccer ball.
"So what's up?" She asked.
I opened up the book I had with me and said," Are you aware of a job Sheisty did before he left for Germany."
"Vaguely." Janelle crossed her legs, "It went bad, someone was not where they were supposed to be. Sheisty was the only one the cops knew for sure was there." There was a pause, "What does that have to do."
"Q was with him."
"Oh you two are involved again?" She asked.
I turned a page, "It's a long story."
"An interesting one as well I bet. Don't worry I always did think you two were made for each other. Sometimes men do stupid shit. Like Sheisty and that job." She was quiet for a moment. "The cops are looking for Q?"
I gave her the cliff notes version of everything I knew. When I was finished she asked, "You want me to get rid of her?"
"No, I want to know how she got the information and her husband's involment." I said, "And any information you have on both of them."
Janelle stood, "Okay."
"Are you going to tell me why you are back? I know you did not come just to help me."
Janelle smiled, "Another time. Let's just clean up the mess the men in our lives caused first. Check you glove compartment too."
With that she just walked away. I sat there for twenty minutes longer before I stood and went to my car. After turning on the car i checked the glove compartment. In it was a iphone 6s and a gun. I sighed and made my way home.
The iphone began to ring and I answered it, "Do I have to throw this one away too?"
Janelle laughed, "No that one cannot be traced. You can hold on to that one for now." She then got straight to buisness. "It's all my fault. We can talk about the details later, but the last job that Q went on with Sheisty was a setup."
I frowned, "For you?"
"Indirectly but yes. Bryson is someone from my past, and I don't know how his "wife" fits into this or who she is but, is there any way you can set up a meeting?"
I still had his number. "Yes."
"Good, see if you can set something up for tonight." She said. "I have to go see a man about a car. By the way this phone, you don't just have to call me if there is a problem."
I smiled, and I wondered what sparked this change in her. She told me prior to only call her if I needed something. Now she was willing to get closer. I never had family like that, Tamera, Mike and Brooke were the closet I had ever had to family.
"I will. I will see you at my place in a couple of hours, go see that man about your car."
We hung up and I went home. I took a long shower and dressed in a black printed t, blue jeans and threw on black slippers. My door bell rang and to my surprise Bryson was standing in my doorway. He smiled at me and i hesitated before moving aside and letting him in.
"I was surprised to get your text," he said as I closed the door. When I turned back around I came face to face with the. Barrel of a gun. He smiled as I froze and my eyes widdened. "So lets find a seat and get comfortable while we wait for your sister to get here.
I lead him into my livingroom and he motioned for me to sit on my couch as he took the seat next me to me.
"You and her have those same eyes. I really wished you'd entertained me a little longer. I was always curious about you." He said causly. As if he were not holding me hostage in my house.
I frowned and said, "So what is this all about? What kind of sick game are you playing?"
He laughed, "This is just like a game." Her phone began to buzz on her coffee table.
Q's name flashed on the screen and Bryson's smile widdened. He picked up my phone and answered it on speaker. "Queintin." He said in amusement.
"What are you doing with her phone?" Quientin asked in a low voice.
Bryson laughed, "Why are you calling her phone when you are still living with and fucking my wife? That is the real question. Why don't you come over and let's have a chat?"
"Don't come he has a..." pain exploded in my head as Bryson hit me with the butt of his gun.
I could here Quinten yelling as Bryson looked at me a frown on his face. "I did not want to do that." He said to me, "you and your sister seem to share more than just that eye color." He held the phone up to his lips. "Listen to me closely Q, it is not my intention to kill her, but I would hate to have to put my hands on her again. Hitting women is nasty business." He ended the call and powered my phone off.
I held the side of my face that was now throbbing and asked, "If you came here for my sister, why do you need Quentin here?"
"After everything he put you through, why do you even care what happens to him?" Bryson asked. "You deserved way better than that?"
At first, I thought it was odd that that he would even care. Here he was holding me at gun point, he had just hit me. Then i leaned back into my chair. I let my hands fall away from my face, as I mentally began to connect the dots.
"Just what is this about? You might as well tell me now while we wait for my sister and Quentin to come." I said softly. "Tell me how we ended up here?"
Bryson laughed, "You really think he will come to save you? A man who let another woman get in-between you?"
I folded my arms over my chest, "I know without doubt he will come."
"And how can you be so sure? He let you drown before why would he come to your rescue now?"
A small smile formed on my list, "I will answer your question if you answer mine."
"Why not. Lets just say once upon a time there was a girl who met a man. He took her away from all of the bad things, gave her everything her heart desired and more. However he was not a good man. In fact he was a very bad man but he loved her. He loved her so much that when she ran, he did everything to get her. He killed people just to make her see that no matter where she went, no matter where she hid, he would always find her."
I froze, he was here for my sister. My sister never stayed in the same place for too long. She always made me destroy a phone after we made contact. I always thought it was because of the lifestyle she lived, and that she just enjoyed traveling as much as I did. It had never occurred to me that she was running away from something. But it still did not explain what I had to do with all this, why he would involve Quentin.
"So let me guess you are that bad man? My sister left and now you are using me for some sick revenge plot?"
He laughed, "No I am not the bad man in this story. Sure I set Sheisty up, it was just a very interesting but unintentional coincidence that Quentin was there. We had no clue he would lead us to you." He studied me, "Sure I have done some horrible things, I will probably do worse things, but I am not the man who is killing everyone that gets close to her. No, I was just sent to give her a message."
I frowned, "So when this is all over, you and your wife will leave?"
"Why yes, we certainly will but he has not let me know if he wants me to take you along for the ride as well."
"Bryson." Janelle said as she slowly walked into the room her gun pointed at him. "So very interesting to find you here."
He looked up at her a smiled, "I don't know what took you so long. Here have a seat we have business to discuss."
She never moved her eyes away from him as she asked, "You okay sis?"
"Yeah, more or less."
"We can talk, but you need to leave her out of this." Janelle said. "It does not concern her."
"But you know how he is. He knows about her now. He had me integrate myself into her life just to find out where exactly you were. Although how he knew you would come here is beyond me."
Janelle laughed bitterly, "So he did not tell you about Germany then."
Bryson looked at her in surprise and before he could answer Quentin came gun in hand pointing at Bryson.
"Oh good all parties are here." Bryson said taking a seat. "Now we can talk."
